China - Taiwan Developments

Just want to remind people that strictly speaking taiwan and china are still engaged in a civil war (interrupted due to the korean war), as far as I'm aware there has been no official cease fire or recognition of independence/sovereignty to each other. So any hostilities is just a continuation from their 30+ year break. And technically taiwan could legitimately claim the whole of china as their own if the underdogs somehow manage to oust the ccp.

They wouldn't even start a war. They would do a Ukraine and just sit back as China has nukes as well. China could take advantage after seeing Russia just got sanctions and knowing the no country could economically sanction them seeing how many countries, especially the US are dependent on their goods and manufacturing.

I think the big thing here is that America decided to stop flinching after withdrawing from Afghanistan which a lot of countries saw as weakness.

They putting those tanks on boats?

No, those are all heavy tanks. China has light tanks to do an invasion with (amphibious landing and air drops). Besides, China moves around military equipment all the time, so something about this news deliberately made to draw attention. They also don't have to move ballistic launchers to that province since they have bases to launch missiles at Taiwan should they wish to.

My best guess as to what is going on here is that the internet is used to drive people on.

Taiwan has always been on China's radar, so there is zero chance their military is not geared for invading the island, while fending off the USA and Japan potentially.

Agreed

But like Hong Kong - they want it functioning and intact -
There a militaristic angle on it, but also an economic angle - the US and the EU are big markets for China.

They don't have enough capacity at sea. I am sure their new carrier seaworthiness will be expedited, but that carrier alone doesn't make them competitive. I expect real threats by 2027, unless relationships improve.
