I said that my figures were from the 1970s and from memory. Good luck finding enrollment figures for the army or 1970s. I had them at University, they that are enormously difficult to get.

But let's go with the 1982 figures, up to 50% of all whites students who could write matric didn't. The army served as a jobs program for these guys.

The whites you are basing your points around were specifically the low income poor class whites. A small minority in apartheid days. After conscription when the ANC took over, white unemployment was only 2-3 percent.

Strange how you can read statistics and draw entirely incorrect conclusions from the presented facts. Nowhere does it say or imply that just over 50% of whites in 1982 wrote matric.

If you take population growth into account, with 5.7% of whites in matric and 8.8% in Sub A, those stats imply that over 70% of whites went on to write matric.

That was after the period, conscripting was instituted in the 1970s already.

The rate who enrolled in 1982 were just over 50%. A percentage of that also didn't finish matric, you're close to 50%. Take into account that by 1982 white education significantly improved already compared to the 70s when many whites were only 1 generation into urbanisation.

it was rational at the time, as the economy didn't have such a high demand for matric, I actually think that pushing more kids to finish matric dumbed down the value of the certificate.

You can't post a compelling argument if your basic stats you start with are off. The data you linked to says nowhere that just over 50% enrolled in matric in 1982. That's in your mind, and if you do the maths it is also nowhere near 50%.

The stats listed are that 5.7% of whites were enrolled in matric compared to 8.8% of Sub A, B and Standard 1's.

With population growth in the 70's and 80's one can easily assume that the population of 7 and 8 year old whites, numbered around 15% higher than 17 and 18 year old whites at matric age.

Using those numbers that would equate to 75% of whites enrolling for matric. Taking other factors into account that might be 70%, but nowhere close to 50%.

The majority of the white urbanization took place in the 1950s and 1960s, that is when you see expanding populations, fertility then starts falling.

5.7/8.8 = 50.16%, that assumes that they were equally distributed,

But just take STD8 to STD12, assuming that 16 year old and 18 year olds have the same proportion of the population,
5.7/7.8 = 75%, still 1/4 of the whites didn't finish matric,


Now if you wind back the clock to 1967 the point when conscription was introduced, that ratio gets even wider.

The point I am getting out is that the military helped industrialize SA as it did with America, it's part of the largest industrial program.
