China - Taiwan Developments

USA isn't taking a side bro, it's just defending Taiwan bro.

Truly amazing to read.

When you were in school maybe you had a friend who unwillingly donated his lunch money to you. Now maybe the neutral teach said, Vorrie, if you take Little Jonny's money, I will take you to the principal's office, OK? Your teacher remained neutral, because your friend Johnny would not get a free pass to take money from you either.

United States maintains that it is not taking sides in the Taiwan issue and is merely fulfilling its obligations under the Taiwan Relations Act to help Taiwan maintain its self-defense capability. The United States has also argued that it has a stake in maintaining peace and stability in the Asia-Pacific region, and that any escalation of tensions over Taiwan could have far-reaching consequences for regional security.
In other words - US weapons supermarket is now open for Taiwan.

Gee I wonder why over 57% want unification.

Like I said, @BBSA knows literally nothing.

People in Taiwan literally believe that one day they're going to be in charge of the mainland like the ye olde days. That's what unification means to them.

Citation for the bold part, the graph does not prove or disprove this.

That's the Taiwanese belief. That China belongs to them. Suggest you read up on the history.

Perhaps my colours are displaying incorrectly, or I missed a conversation somewhere along the line, but doesn't this graph show the opposite? That the majority do not want unification?

Blue - Maintain status quo (ie not unification) 28.5%
Green - Maintain status quo towards independence 25.4%
Dark Green - Independence ASAP 4.6%

Even ignoring the no responses or future decisions this puts the number at 58.5% that do not seek unification.

I group status quo with unification because they end in the same goal.

Status quo is essentially, "sit and wait, but we maintain a claim."

The status quo is currently that Taiwan holds a claim over the mainland as "true China" but can't do anything about it.

Unification means that they actively want to bring things back together, and I don't think we're pretending the average Taiwanese means under the control of the CCP.

I lump them together. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

So it's you imputing your own preconceived idea into the thing. In this case, as for the Red Chinese, the most uncharitable thing. Taiwan is biding her time, ready to pounce on China.... that sort of nonsense.

Status quo is: we continue to live on our island while mainland China becomes stronger and stronger.

Please provide the citation, other than "uh it looks like that to me, I'm a mind reader" for your claim that most Taiwanese want to exert military or political force over the PRC.

But China does?
you are questioning if China has interests in Taiwan?!?

Taiwan is part of China

sweet zombie jesus, does USA have interests in Texas? does South Africa have interests in the Western Cape?

when you wake up today I sincerely hope you remember to take your meds, it's the only explanation I can think of for such an irrational question o_O

Taiwan, Texas and the Western Cape are democracies, China is not.

Texas is whatever USA is, which happens to be a democracy
Western Cape is whatever South Africa is, which happens to be a democracy

can either of them change their system of rule? no, they cannot, it is not up to them

in exactly the same fashion: Taiwan is whatever China is
that's not a democracy, Taiwan gets to vote on provincial matters as allowed by China, which is their actual country
