Ok, so im on a business trip in China. We have an apartment here, and it has a 2mb broadband connection. The line is in a wireless router so i connect wirlessly with my laptop. The connection is sweet, but at times it goes from 10/10 to about 1/10. This happens especially at night time. I'm not sure whats wrong. I try connect to skype, but it just doesnt work at times, then at other times it goes like a beast. Its so on and off. Is there anyway I could possibly fix this issue? Surely Chinese internet should be on another standard compared to south african? Like they have gigabit lines in hong kong which is like 2hours on the train? I got a better connection using the hotspot in hong kong airport.

1 billion people all sharing those international Internet pipes going into China + Chinese government filtering all your traffic (yes, they are listening to your skype calls) = bad Internet.

Is the wireless connection encrypted and there's no WiFi signals nearby using the same channel which may interfere with yours?

Remember what population China has and I can tell you their local speed should be ok but just expect SA conditions for international.

one minor prob, the routers page is in chinese. I have to copy paste to google translate all the time. Why does the connection become better in the early mornings then? isn't that when all the people start downloading emails etc?

And I have done lots of sightseeing, don't worry about that :D

Is that legal? Couldn't be practical either

They can only listen to the calls through Tom-Skype (Which is the localized Chinese version of Skype) but not the original Skype. And yes, do you think US, UK and everyone else is not monitoring the internet/phone/fax network?

Cyberarmy, should i have it encrypted? the security settings are ticked at WPA-PSK [TKIP] + WPA2-PSK [AES]
Using channel 11
and its set to use both g and b type wifi

If you have WPA/WPA2 enabled then it should be fine. It's very common for people not to encrypt their wireless access point and others around will just use/abuse the connection as it's open and free (and in China at the moment they don't have data caps).

Degrading of network as what you are experiencing at the moment is a typical problem in China, cheap uncapped internet resulted in people doing P2P 24/7.......

You in Guangzhou?

haha, yes i am in Guangzhou? So the internet is always like this?? Cos the speed swings are insane?

Wonder which ISP your apartment was connected to. Do you not have anyone who can speak Mandarin/Cantonese? If it's such a big problem try ask the local guys to call the ISP, they are quite efficient as I remember my friend told me ADSL installation usually take 24-48 hrs.

I hope this time you will have sometime to tour around the city and do some shopping (electronics, clothing), that's if you are not going to/through HK.

how did u know im in guangzhou? I have 2 people at my beck and call that translate for me, ill get one of them to phone the isp. Not sure which one im on.

dude i have lived in the uk for 3 years downloaded like 2.5 tb of series and movies every 2 months from torrents and not had one complaint from my isp.. its illegal for them to tap into your connection they can monitor it but not allowed to search packet data.. they need a warrant for that. same go's for telephone line

Is that not what I said?

@Ghost02, ofcourse its legal, they are the goddamn government. China has almost 0 privacy laws!

Where the hell do you store 10TB every 10 months? Must have some serious NAS, or you've bought a hell of alot of blank DVD's
