Chippa United owner Chippa Mpengesi has confirmed that he is in talks with the Eastern Cape government about moving the club to Port Elizabeth.

The Chilli Boys were handed the trophy today after winning the National First Division. A lot of that success had to do with their good record at Philippi Stadium, but a change could now be on the cards.

“For now I can confirm with you that there are talks with Port Elizabeth,” Mpengesi says.

“I have sentiments about Cape Town; it’s where I started everything with a big investment in Philippi Stadium, but what has been offered is playing with my emotions. So one has to make a decision, which I will soon do.”

Mpengesi adds: “The proposal that’s made to us is a permanent move or no move. So that’s the decision we have to make. As you know running a PSL team requires money, and I’ve used my money most of the time.

“That’s why I have to take a decision whether I have to keep on using my money or maybe run it as a business that can make a profit.”

The Eastern Cape has been bereft of a professional soccer team since the days of Bush Bucks, with Bay United having a brief – and very unsuccessful – stint in the top-flight before folding.

I really hope that this happens. I don't want to get too excited yet, there have been too many stuff ups before. Bay United left, the Maritzburg purchase fell through, Bay Stars were sold.

It would be great to have PSL football back in PE though.

I know they were sold to Chippa Ngcolomba and renamed the Morning Stars but I didn't know they moved?

I'm surprised Chippa didn't buy Chippa United!

They are still in PE but not nearly as good. As Bay Stars they had NMMU backing and finiahed 3rd and 2nd in their 2 seasons. As Morning Stars they are 12th. NMMU now focuses on Varsity Football.

It looks to be the NMB municipality. The Daily Dispatch says that it is a done deal with a 5 year term. That makes it look like the team has not been bought outright. No mention of a stadium but it would be mad not to use NMB Stadium.

look if its a massive sponsorship then it makes sense. although what about the support base? no use you have that nice stadium empty everytime they play. and is it tied to their psl status? ideally the owner should be able to run the club without his money. they need a psl team there.

Not many events can really fill the stadium, and I'm fine with that. I want more events though. Access were given a mandate to bring in football and rugby tenants. The PSL status is the big issue. With it, the team could get 10 000 to 15 000 fans in. Without it, it is unlikely to draw 1 000. The same issue happened with the Kings. Super Rugby could pull 30 000, the First Division is lucky to pull 5 000.

17 May 2014, Cape Town: Chippa United Chairman, Siviwe ‘Chippa’ Mpengesi has announced that the team’s proposed relocation to Port Elizabeth is now off following a series of meetings between the Club, Nelson Mandela Metro and the Stadium Management.
The Club Chairman, Siviwe ‘Chippa’ Mpengesi made the announcement on Saturday evening.
“We will no longer be relocating the team to Port Elizabeth as we had earlier anticipated and it was reported in some sections of the media.
“It was obvious that our proposal was appealing to the people of the Eastern Cape who had interest to see us playing at Nelson Mandela Stadium. It was never about money or competition, our move was motivated by the interest we have in the development of football in the Eastern Cape.
“We felt we also had to respect the process that was already underway as far as negotiations between the Metro and the other Club are concerned. We
It is of course a sad announcement to the people of the Eastern Cape but because of the true value of football and the commitment we've made to those close to us, we will not be all lost in the Eastern Cape; there will be plans of bringing the club to the province soon one way or another.
“We are committed in expanding our footprint to the Eastern Cape,” said Mpengesi who was born and bred in the Eastern Cape before moving to Western Cape back in 1996.

Mpengesi said he has now redirected his focus in building the Club and compete next season, “We are now focusing on our preparations for next season. Our objective is to be competitive and to be a force to be reckoned with in the PSL.
“The players are off to recharge and we will announce our preseason plans in the next couple of days. We are fortunate this time around that we have enough time to take stock and plan for the upcoming season.
“Ours now is also to focus on re-building Phillipi stadium and make it our fortress this coming season and hopefully for many years to come.
“We would like to see the stadium hosting no less than 20 000 fans in the near future,” added Mpengesi.

But Maritzburg United is now on the cards
 
PREMIER Soccer League (PSL) side Chippa United is not moving to Nelson Mandela Bay and no offer was made for the team to relocate from Cape Town, budget and treasury portfolio head Balu Naran said yesterday.

Rubbishing earlier claims by Chippa United boss Siviwe “Chippa” Mpengesi that he was in discussions with the municipality and the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium management about moving the team to the city permanently, Naran said it could not be further from the truth.

This comes as Mpengesi confirmed on Saturday that the team’s dream of coming to the province had been thwarted by advanced negotiations between the metro and Maritzburg United. - Rochelle de Kock

Im lost...:confused:..why is he even questioning this? any pro team should be run as a business.

Most football teams don't turn a profit. Owners often poor a lot of money into their teams, especially at the levels below the PSL. The owners do it for the prestige.

It looks like this move isn't happening though. Apparently, Access, the stadium operators were already moving Maritzburg United to PE. I hope that the deal does happen otherwise turning down Chippa becomes a very stupid move.

Yes the like of Motsepe see it as an elaborate toy, but he's the only one in this country not looking to make money. Everyone else (in the PSL) is trying to make money from club ownership.
 
Chippa United is indeed coming to PE.

IT’S official – PSL team Chippa United will be bringing topflight soccer to Nelson Mandela Bay when they relocate from Cape Town before this season’s premier division competition starts in August. Even though some role players were still unclear about the move, most people were excited, especially team owner Siviwe “Chippa” Mpengesi.

“We are moving to Port Elizabeth. The municipality will probably announce the move officially later this week, but I can tell you we are coming to Nelson Mandela Bay,” he said last night.

Chippa chief executive Peter Koutroulis said the team would make a formal announcement from its side today, a little more than a month after the club released a statement on May 17 saying Chippa had turned down the lucrative offer from the municipality to relocate to Port Elizabeth.

There still seems to be confusion about stadiums, but I am glad that they will be in PE. It will be maf if they play anywhere but NMB Stadium.

This deal went through, apparently due to Maritzburg turning the offer down.

There is? AFAIBT they'll play in the stadium. The only problem might be if there is a clash between Currie Cup and PSL matches on the same day.

Access should be able to sort out a schedule, but today's paper said that some details still aren't done.

The EC government are involved, so EL and Mthatha may get matches.

One NMBM offical said that they may use smaller stadiums for low key matches.I think that the best bet for building a strong product is using NMB Stadium.
 
It looks like their first match will be a friendly against Kaizer Chiefs:

“I’ve been here for the past three days and I’m glad to be back at home. Yes, the deal is sealed and confirmed although the municipality will officially announce on Monday. We’ll play Amakhosi next Saturday, July 19. They’ll be arriving today for their pre-season camp in PE. I want to thank the municipality and the Mayor for welcoming and supporting us,” said Mpengesi.

Soccer Laduma

I hope that Access handle these matches properly. The level of organisation at previous football matches (the WC excluded) left a lot to be desired. That being said, they don't bother to open many shops at rugby friendlies either.
