My Wife has just bought a chipped XBox 360 from her Son ( my StepSon ).

Is it any good for anything else other than playing purate games?

Can it be updated?

Can it be used to stream movies and music to our TV.

Anything else useful you can do with it?

Want to know before I shove it up his arse sideways

It can do everything a normal xbox 360 can do. Yes, that includes xbox live, updating, streaming, etc.. It just goes one step further in that it plays pirated games as well.

This is all assuming that it has been flashed with the latest version.

My reading on the internet says that chipped XBoxes are banned from XBox Live ...

He must still bring it, so will check ...

It depends on how it was chipped and how it reports to the XBL service. Using chipped or hacked consoles on PSN or XBL is always a waiting game with how much time left before it gets banned. Some people last longer, some people get banned straight away.

Generally, its just better to buy a genuine Xbox 360 and carry on from there. As a local streaming device and for playing games offline, it'll still work fine.

DO NOT UPDATE. The chip becomes useless. Done that with mine and it became useless. Now have 3 rings of death. But not from the update. From not using it for about a year.

I would update it , update via usb though is recommended.

Games are so cheap these days compared to when chipping made sense.
Best to go legit Id say.

Was that years ago?

I've been out of the loop for ages, but there was once an update that removed the flash. After that, LT3 came out (maybe 2012?) and since then it has remained undetectable.. Unless something has happened in the past few months because I haven't been following.

Also, regarding people getting banned, that wasn't the case at all. If it was flashed properly, and the games were burned properly, it was completely undetectable. The only people that got banned were the ones that couldn't resist playing pirated games online before the game's actual release date (leaked copies), as it made it rather easy for MS to identify them as pirates.

Yeah, like I said, mine Wife has already bought the thing from her Son.

I couldn,t be bothered worth a rats arse about chipping it. So if updating it kills the chip, but I can still use XBox Live - fantastic.

Games are cheap enough, and even cheaper if you go to Cash Crusaders ...

Well safe to use on a chipped XBox ... , also does it do any known covert ET call home calls to the Mother Ship?

Just because it comes from MS and is part of their operating system does not automatically make it "safe"
