After a massive probe, university finds him guilty
Shaik copied the work of five international professors published in a book more than 20 years ago. Chippy Shaik has been officially unmasked as a fake and unceremoniously stripped of his doctorate.

This follows an exhaustive international forensic investigation by the University of KwaZulu-Natal into his doctoral thesis. The verdict this week was that it had been “plagiarised massively”.

The institution’s investigation, the biggest of its kind ever undertaken, was sparked nine months ago after the Sunday Times exposed Shaik for stealing the work of others to get his 2003 PhD in mechanical engineering. German authorities are investigating allegations that Shaik — the former acquisitions chief in the country’s controversial multibillion-rand arms deal — was paid a R21-million bribe by German arms manufacturer ThyssenKrupp.

Shaik, brother of convicted fraudster Schabir Shaik, copied the work of five international professors published in a book more than 20 years ago.

To get his 217-page thesis, Shaik simply had the work, published by professors VG Piskunov and Viktor Verijenko and three others, translated from Russian into English

Classy family.

Good work by the investigating team from the university! The institution should recover lost time by the university personnel investigating them.

It was probably a 217 page, double spaced, dissertation!

Wow, Chippie sure knows how to piss the wrong people off. He solicited a bribe by the germans by plagiuarizing the russians. Only to screw over the South Africans.

VIVA Comrade!

To me, the worst is when his brother was sentenced to a prison term and the family made a statement (via the 3rd brother, Mo Shaik, I think) to the effect of 'he is innocent and we are leaning on God to help us through this tough time'.

WTF? If you stole money, STFU and don't bring religion into it. Just serve the damn sentence and stop boring us.

A chip of the old block. Or is that chippy of the old block? :p

Heard on Highveld this morning, how Chippy's lawyer was complaining how Chippy lost face and means of generating a income because of this. How sad, too bad...

Somehow I don't think too many people will be sympathetic.

Play nice now guys... my old man is of the opinion that IF Jacob Zuma comes into power, he will be giving Trev Manuels job to Mo....

So you surely don't want to p*** the ShaikBoyz off at this stage?

:D

Now that's a frightening thought

I wonder what financial background Mo has. I think he used to (or still) work in Foreign Affairs.

None that I know of. He obtained three degrees at the former University of Durban-Westville. One was a science degree while the others were optometry and his masters in optometry. He is no longer with the Department of Foreign Affairs and has since set himself up as a business entrepreneur.

You sure those degrees are the real deal? ;)

He was one in a long list of degrees repealed by UKZN.

That place has always seemed a bit dodgy to me... Didn't Alec Erwin go there? :(

errr and 99% of thesis or dissertation doccie's are quotes anyway to substantiate a hypothesis..SO I SAY...SO FLIPPIN' WHAT.

Instead that these universities focus on other issues like you know CURING AIDS, they rathers spend months trying to discredit some dude's paper..pathetic

There's a big difference between using the research of others to substantiate your argument, and plagiarism.

I don't think that UKZN's Electrical Engineering dept has a Curing Aids dept.

I remember Carte Blanche doing a story on this type of stuff, i.e students getting their thesis material from just googling.

Bad google, very bad. :D

No more original thought?

What is the use then of going to university in the first place?

Why doesn't the professors do their jobs?

Really? Can you substantiate your statements?

The strange thing about the whole Chippie and UKZN issue is that PhD's are normally defended before a panel of expert examiners appointed by the university. I suspect that this never happened in the case of UKZN. At many universities, defending your work applies from an MSc Eng level.
