My cholesterol is about 6, age 57, I want to bring down but not with medication, it seems rolled oats is good, but not the quick type, but a long cooking one, does jungle oats qualify here.

OP, why not just take a statin? I don't get it.

Do a Meat + Leafy Green Only diet for a month and see if it helps

At your age don't unless you are doing this under medical supervision and a strictly controlled diet.

My story:

My cholesterol was 6.3 when I did my previous blood test (I go for regular fasting blood tests). I was using red yeast rice that my clinical dietician was trying for a year as a natural alternative to my statins. I had to follow a strict low fat diet and could not eat things like avocado or lamb. My cholesterol struggled to come down and would often spike.

Three weeks ago I went back on my statins after I saw a specialist for an unrelated problem and he looked at my blood test history. He immediately put me back on statins. He has worked together with my clinical dietician until recently, so understands her decision.

I'm 43 and this weekend is the 4th anniversary of my idiopathic acute pancreatic attack that should have killed me. My life was hanging on a thread that night and was only saved due to the immediate medical treatment I sought at the hospital 1km from my house.

I've had a second less deadly attack since then and my gallbladder removed.

To give you an idea of how deadly acute pancreatitis is, the hospital I use looses patients constantly. On my first attack they had lost a patient the previous two weeks and my second attack they had lost a patient the previous night.

I was not a big drinker, actual would go without drink for months and have not touched alcohol in 4 years. I don't smoke or never have. Have never used drugs and never been bitten by a scorpion. The normal suspects in the majority of acute pancreatic attacks in males.

I was unaware of my cholesterol back then (age 39) but after seeing three world class specialist (one took special interest in my case), my two GP's, a clinical dietician and a rheumatologist, they all highlighted the risk of cholesterol. So I've had 7 medical opinions. There is also an agreement that while my acute pancreatic attacks have been idiopathic, cholesterol played a part.

That is my story to highlight the importance of don't screw with your health, get proper medical advice.

Great that you are pasting to a link to the authoritative source of this topic, but was that a TL;DR moment for you.

Even if your side effects are frustrating, don't stop taking your statin medication for any period of time without talking to your doctor first. Your doctor may be able to come up with an alternative treatment plan that can help you lower your cholesterol without uncomfortable side effects.

The side effects are also dependant on your lifestyle.

Fake news ;) is totally made up to get you onto alternatives. A single months supply of red yeast rice costs more than a years prescription to the equivalent strength statin.
This is just stupid, why would anyone need to buy red yeast rice. All you have to do is cut out carbs

It works for cholesterol but he should chat to his gp as well at that age and history.
Sure. Very dependent on the GP though as some of them know nothing except how to sell medication.

What is the general consensus regarding avocado and cholesterol in the medical world ? I see mixed opinions/articles on the net.

According to the Health Professions Council of South Africa, more than 37,300 doctors are registered in the country and almost 12,300 of them are qualified as specialists. But what is not known is how many of these doctors still practise here

Then you should find yourself a better GP.

Cut out sugar. Honestly, since I started cutting sugar in my diet and instead using sweeteners, my cholesterol improved.

Also eat lots of fibre - jungle oats works well, and also your all brans and weetbixs, every day.

Avo is high in fat. I'm only allowed 15g raw serving of fat a day on my eating plan which is for life. That is 15g is the weight of the fat source, not the actual fat content. Basically three flat teaspoons of avo is my fat intake for the entire day so I avoid it when I can.

Once again, people should see a clinical dietician who can determine the correct amount of fat they need in a balance diet.
