Getting ADSL for the first time, and I must say, it's not easy to choose.

I'm leaning towards a capped account because it seems like there is less shaping on most capped lines.
If I go capped line then I can get 200GB a month from Axxess at R379 a month.

I'd rather have 200GB of decent speed than uncapped with speeds that aren't usable.

Total budget, approximately R800pm.
Uses: general internet surfing, VPN for work, YouTube and p2p for downloads. Don't mind scheduling p2p for afterhours.

Is Axxess a good starting point?

Best bet is going to all the threads/topics like afrihost ,webafrica and mweb ect and seeing what the people have to say about their services

Webafrica/Crystal Web - IS Backbone, Good latency, Good Network, Good Pricing

Axxess/Afrihost - MTN backbone, Latency issues at times, Slow speeds when network not upgraded, Cheap, Network works properly when it works, When it doesn't work...Eish.

Mweb - Uncapped with thresholds, Network is good. Standard and Premium products just with different threshold amounts before throttling.

That's a good summary thanks ghost!

The only question i do have is how good is crystalweb's standard uncapped for streaming/Gaiming/odd download here and there?

Ballpark would be around 200-300GB per month.

Depends on what line speed you are on.

Webafrica is your best option imo , tried them all including Crystal Web.

Crystal web used to be on the cybersmart backbone, They're moved to IS. Completely different on new backbone.

Afrihost Business Uncapped.

R497 per month, for both data and line, fully unshaped/unthrottled 100% of the time.

Obviously excludes Telkom voice line, which is mandatory at R166.50 per month.

EDIT: This is for 2Mb/s.

I'm also having a hard time choosing a new ISP like the OP, I have the option of either 4mb or 10mb but im kinda unsure if i go the capped route what my usage would be.

And during IPC congestion. It's not unshaped/unthrottled 100% of the time.

farking brilliant, is what I will say.

Netflix solid at 1080 on a 10mb uncapped line.
D3 latency 200ms.

How does the shaping / throttling work on their 4meg uncapped accounts?

From what I've seen on my account, It is dynamic, So if the network is under heavy load, your downloads (p2p and news servers) get shaped but everything else will stay unshaped.

It's kinda hard to resist Crystalweb with everyone recommending them so much lately!
Colour me convinced! Hopefully my line gets installed tomorrow then i can start testing for myself :D

got a test account now, going to test the service tonight

problem is the packages for me personally are bit big,i use 60-80GB per month ,their smallest is 90gb day,380gb night for R295.. kinda on the pricy side :/

Good luck testing, and report back please!

I still can't decide what package to get from them, it's between 4mb uncapped and the 200GB capped option. Uncapped 10mb is a little pricey imo , but with all the praise they get they must be doing something right!
