Can anyone give me some insight on PVA paints? I'm busying painting the interior of my house, and have decided to just go with white PVA all around for the time being. Without much knowledge, I went to a paint store, explained my needs, and was advised on a brand to buy. I ended up with 10l of PVA costing around R400. After the initial results, I am now wanting to buy an additional 20l.

I decided to check my options online, and after looking at all the options and very variable price range, I don't know how to decide what is best to buy. Link

Makros price on the 10l Dulux luxurious silk is quite good - it's a very good quality paint.

My only advice is not to use Matt paint for the inside. It is terrible to clean

Can anyone advise on the amount of paint needed for a flat of 60sqm,

and also when they say "both for interior and exterior", whats the difference since i would think exterior is stronger.

We want to paint the flat white and change the main room and lounge.

thanks for the info

You will have to work out your wall area of the rooms you want to paint. when you have that, try this paint calculator to give you an idea of how many litres you will need.

With paints it is all about the quality of the paint and the preparation of the wall. A quick sand(fine grit) and wash will make a huge difference.
With what was the wall previously painted? PVA or a Enamel based paint?
Also. What traffic do you expect "on" the wall? Some of the PVA's doesn't clean up as easy as the Enamel paints. For certain areas you want "hard wearing" paints. Do you have kids?

As stated above. Stick to the "name brands" 40L of cheap paint usually "covers" less than 20L of a good quality paint. Been there done that!

Hey Chaps. Just wanted to say thanks for the advice and input! I contacted another user named demon angel, after reading his input on another thread; He was exceptionally helpful, and I thought I would post his feedback here for anyone who finds this thread and needs the advice later.

I've been reading your input on the following thread and you seem to be very knowlegable on the topic of paint. Woudl you be willing to assist with some questions I have?

Basically I'm in the process of painting the interior of my house. As I am wanting to rent the place out, I've decided to go all white with PVA. I am needing to get another 20l, and am on a tight budget; What do I need to consider when buying? What are cheaper options, that are not going to let me down in long run?

Shot for any help.

Hi ArtiXim.

Firstly white is a good practical idea for painting the interior for a rental.
I want to add that many of Plascons best products EG:wall and all, are exactly the same in the Roofseal and Wall seal range at a third of the cost!
They are very good at marketing!

Do not use a matt paint!

It gets dirty so quick its a waste of time.

I recommend a washable paint with a sheen.
Three options exist for you, all of them a washable sheen but i need to ask...
Is there any damp or staining in the interior?
Or mold that develops in time?

Option one for a place that is prone to black mould is Plascon Roofseal white.
Be warned with this option the smell is intense like a Jeyes fluid, however we have painted places with carpets that smell funky and the whole place smells disinfected and clean.
It needs a week of airing out to get rid of the intense smell, but its antifungel properties will inhibit mold for years.

Option 2 for a quality paint with sealing properties along with being highly washable/durable, i recommend Plascon Wallseal white.
It also prevents damp and has a really mild paint smell similar to wall and all and double velvet, and its a better product.

The Third option is the franchise Build- it's own acrylic sheen based products, call Build it acrylic sheen.
Its very cheap and very good and for a place that only need a paint, that covers well it works beautifully, since its also washable.

Another decent paint is Jacks paint Panache Vinyl silk range.
Also very good but pricier then the above paints.

All these options should last you 5 to 8 years if the correct paint preparation is done and damp treated etc.

LT paint in Woodstock is very cheap with paint, so i recommend you go there to buy your paint.
Otherwise Build IT or Makro will have the Plascon products.

Best of luck to you.

After a bit more correspondance around price, I found that I was getting really great prices from Build It in Cape Town. Ended up paying R550 for 20ltr of Plascon Wallseal White.
