Been a fan of Googles Chrome for a while now. But now it just let me down. Was downloading a 2GB linux distro using my capped local-only account. after 1.5GB had been downloaded, I paused it, changed to my non capped account so I can quickly do something, changed back and clicked resume. Suddenly the ISO opened and Chrome assumed the download was done.... So now I have to restart the entire process again... Seems I'll be going back to Firefox...

Hmmm, large browser downloads are sketchy at best, especially using the pause button and then you change your connection midway? Have you done such a procedure before?

I can't say I have done so myself but the pause button has never worked for me and therefore I like to download iso's via torrent rather.

Cant say I've tried it. Seems a bit pathetic that you cant though?

It's your own fault. Use a proper download manager when downloading large files. The same issue would have occurred irrespective of the browser you were using.

It's true what they are saying, it depends from what file hosting sites you are downloading from, some don't allow resuming. Some sites like rapidshare, filetube etc.
It's just their way of saying. Boo hoo, that's how we work, where else will you get this information then?

I've been in that same boat several times, so I know what you are going through.

Ah I see. To answer the post regarding download manager: Why wont browsers invest in their OWN one? Why should I go use a download manager when the browser should do it for me?

Because you use the best application for the job at hand. You can be a jack of all trades or a specialist. I always try to find the best tool for the job. It's kinda like comparing a leatherman to a 300 piece Gedore toolbox.

Sysem, two things:

1 - When you paused your download and changed your account and then changed back again you got a new IP address. According to the server that you were downloading from your download is a completely new one. No wonder the chrome browser does not support this case, it is very unlikely to happen often.

2 - As for a proper download manager, keep in mind that Chrome is written in a country where 10mbps uncapped internet is the norm. You hardly ever need to pause downloads over there, the internet is just on, always. I can understand why Chrome would not want to bloat their browser with an advanced download manager when it will hardly ever be needed.

Having said that, yes, it sucks. I find the Chrome download manager to be a bit too basic. But on the other hand, Chrome takes less than a second to start up, so I really cannot complain :D

As stated above, the new IP Address was probably the nail in the coffin for the failed resume. Not all HTTP servers are set up to allow resumed downloads, which is why it is usually best to instead use FTP to download distros, etc.
