Chrome OS for tablet PCs?

Oh so that is why they give away everything they have, be it Google maps(before that there was no free online mapping) Gmail, Chrome Browser, docs, youtube, and all the other services, it is because they want to be a software house and make money off selling software. That must be the reason why they giving all the money that they make from android app market to the Service providers and handset makers as well.

- Google maps has always had a paid-for model for people wanting to use it commercially, and just 2 weeks ago they announced major plans to give away less for free, and charge more.
- Google docs and Gmail has a paid-for version (Google Apps)
- To get the Google logo on an Android handset, you pay Google money

Google didn't invent any of this stuff nor were they the first to bring free versions to market. Of the things you mentioned, Google Maps, Google Docs, Chrome Browser, Youtube and many of their other services are bought-out companies that had existing free versions. Google didn't make them free, they bought them hoping to make money from them... and didn't. Running a free version as a loss leader is common business practice, it's just that Google isn't very adept at translating that into sales.

The fact is they're trying DESPERATELY to monetize all these projects, as the world at large is beggining to cotton on that they're a one-trick pony. And that doesn't sit well with investors.

Their financials thus far sit VERY well with investors. And besides, you don't make money out of investors - you make money out of running a profitable business. That is something Google are exceptionally good at.

At the end of the day hope Google sticks to their motto "Dont be evil"

This is going to be good as the 3rd device, gadget so those with devices would be able to afford the data cost. You can always root the device and put on your own O.S.

BTW What are the system requirements to run Chrome OS?

They're falling behind the curve of business growth, and the investors have started punishing them. As everyone starts creeping in on Google's territory, they have nothing to fall back on. Remember Google isn't like MS where they're spurned by investors for no good reason, they're a darling of the tech industry, and when their stock price is down over a year (as it currently is) it's a direct reflection that their profits and business plan arent what they should be.

But my original point remains - all their eggs are in one basket. That's just bad business, and everyone knows it, especially Google, which is why they got rid of Schmidt and have totally reconfigured their bonus structures and incentives toward creating new income streams.

Browser Software and cloud computing is the future. I changed company to Google apps more than a year ago, kicked Outlook goodbye, Ms Exchange is gone, no backups, no spam software. What a pleasure. No more MS Office will be installed on any of my companies computers. Share documents, spreadsheet with staff at a drop of a hat. Be it in London or SA every one has the current document. They can steal my Phone, laptop or computer, the office can burn down and I sleep peacefully at night. Had HTC HD2 with win 6.5, ported Andriod on it, what a pleasure, integration to a T.
Browers software is the future, no more MS dominance.

Funny you should mention that... MS is far larger than Google in hosted and cloud apps. And their new Office 360 offering will only help solidify their position. Last I read, MS had more PAYING customers for their hosted email, than Gmail had TOTAL (incl free). Google might get all the press for cloud productivity apps, but right now, MS is quietly getting all the money. As I said before, Google is having major problems turning their really great free offerings into money.

That is why the co I work for is doing so well. Instead if selling a product like old we selling a service....

SA has a bit of an issue with regard to internet access and uptime so companies here wont always be happy with running there entire office online, from invoicing and accounting to POS can now be done via the cloud. Problem is if your internet cost you an arm and a leg and your can be gone for days with no end (Cable theft) its not always such a good place to have all your records.

That's why IBM is doing so well nowdays. Before the dot-com bubble, the big boring companies like IBM who made their money from providing services to big corporates. They never really strayed from that business, got hurt badly in the 90's, and now are back on top, consistently doing better than Google. Definately the market segment to be in going forward right now. If you think about it, cloud computing is just bringing back the old mainframe model from the 60's and 70's, but putting it on the Internet to supercharge it.

Funny you should say that, my entry into the computer world was on a Unysis A series mainframe, and good old saponet + multiplexers. I was just thinking how it is actually moving back to those days :)
