Oh so that is why they give away everything they have, be it Google maps(before that there was no free online mapping) Gmail, Chrome Browser, docs, youtube, and all the other services, it is because they want to be a software house and make money off selling software. That must be the reason why they giving all the money that they make from android app market to the Service providers and handset makers as well.
- Google maps has always had a paid-for model for people wanting to use it commercially, and just 2 weeks ago they announced major plans to give away less for free, and charge more.
- Google docs and Gmail has a paid-for version (Google Apps)
- To get the Google logo on an Android handset, you pay Google money
Google didn't invent any of this stuff nor were they the first to bring free versions to market. Of the things you mentioned, Google Maps, Google Docs, Chrome Browser, Youtube and many of their other services are bought-out companies that had existing free versions. Google didn't make them free, they bought them hoping to make money from them... and didn't. Running a free version as a loss leader is common business practice, it's just that Google isn't very adept at translating that into sales.
The fact is they're trying DESPERATELY to monetize all these projects, as the world at large is beggining to cotton on that they're a one-trick pony. And that doesn't sit well with investors.
