Google testing Chrome update to tackle RAM-killing tabs

Google is testing a new Chrome feature that will show users vital usage stats to prevent the browser from hogging a lot of RAM, Windows Central reports.

The new feature gives users brief RAM usage details when they hover over a tab, making closing unwanted resource-hungry pages easier.

WTF don't they just change the way Chrome uses RAM like an addict? Instead of bringing a feature that shows you which tabs are hogging?

I have a fsck ton of tabs open, always, I am messy like that.

16 Tabs open at the moment. Chrome has 33 process running. using 1031mb of ram.

The 386 motherboard came with expansion slots, so you should be able to upgrade.

This is actually right, because most of the time apps will just allow to use more RAM to cache with etc. (and Chrome preloads pages it thinks you might visit).

147MB in FF, you can profile it as well.
It's also interesting how much e.g. UBlock reduces memory usage.

That's why Edge has been great for me.
60+ tabs open.
Running Workona Tab Manager, with around 12 other spaces, and about 50 tabs per space.
Also running 20+ plugins.
Currently using just under 2.5gig

How about reducing the overall memory usage and processes (not threads) of the browser itself? Empty session with only bookmarks and 8 processes using over 240MB.

It's neither here nor there. Extra RAM should be used for caching but cached data is also volatile data that can be thrown away. Programs should not be wasting RAM with persistent data that slows down the system.

Will be interesting to see per tab, but moreso each extension's memory usage per tab, some rape a few hundred meg by themselves with each page before its even loaded, one of the Adblocks especially

Ja wat, I don't block Broad Media's adverts (keeps the skirts there happy, or so I believe).
