Maybe I’m showing my age, but going to a movie that only ends at 22:45 and then having to drive home with all the criminals spiking roads and the drunk drivers racing etc does not appeal to me. Home streaming is just so convenient.

5. Relaxation.

7. Death.
8. Reading books.
9. Video games.
10. Playing music.
11. Having a hobby.
12. Internet websites and social media.
13. many other things.

Good list but for some weird reason you failed to mentioned the most NB reason:

Financial constraints and/or lack of value for money.

Chat to any common bloke & mention cinema or bioscope & the first thing that comes up "the pricing is insane these days" et al.

I don't know if that is the same as poaching. Or include it under 13. If you'd go but can't afford to go is different maybe to can't go because 24hours in the day and prefer to read a book or do homework with child.

That ties in with the higher education bit and maybe intelligence. One can only watch so much drivel and for intelligent people it's harder to be entertained by the Hollywood and non Hollywood rubbish these days.

Anything which competes with these cinemas can poach the customer and many things compete.

That is debatable.

The heading of this thread title is: Cinemas feeling streaming pain.

It implies streaming is a factor. We established it is much more nuanced than that. The "bucks aspect" is extremely relevant.

Poaching my mate. That means competing for time or effort. Money can also play a role sure, but for me it would be more about more alternatives, including more rewarding ones. I made a list of things which compete for attention and money of the client and some of those things could even be free things, such as relaxing or having a free hobby or spending time with family or romance or whatever. Fact is that many things 'poach' from cinemas, and it need even be streaming. The more educated the populous the less likely they will be entertained by the drivel that Ster Kinekor shows. They could still stream art films such as on MUBI which is available or they may go to a classical music concert or theatre or listen to an interesting podcast instead of seeing explosions and cheesy humour on the 'silver screen'.

Cinemas lament their lot but let's face it. They had customers because SA was always a bit of a dump when it came to culture. In Europe you could go to cabarets, theaters, musicals, concerts, meet ups with intellectuals for say book signing and talks, special cinemas which show art films (eg Labia in Cape Town) or easily buy art films on DVD or Bluray eg the Criterion Collection. But in SA we had relatively little of that. We have Hollywood moviez and now people have the internet and heck they could listen to a Youtube talk on a subject they find interesting which will stimulate them more than the garbage that Hollywood churns out. Maybe as people get better educated and realise there are other options (eg art and intellectual stuff) they can turn to that instead of Hollywood :)
