Sometimes when I make a phone call on my W980 I get the message:"Ciphering not supported this is an unsecured line" or something to that effect anyway.. However, it happens only when my phone displays a 3g+ icon on the top, when that message is gone, it apparently ciphers again..
Anyone have an idea what this can be?

Sounds a bit like you managed to get hold of a spy-phone version of the W980, or maybe has an incompatible firmware version loaded.

My guess is that when your phone switches to use a 3G base-station, it is trying to determine which encryption method to use for encrypting packets on the radio link, and is unable to properly find a supported encryption method.

Nope, it is a legit vodacom phone. Got it from a vodashop. Although, I did update the software via the Sony software, but this happened after that.

I have the same problem. Whenever i make a phonecall or receive 1, it says:
Ciphering not supported by service provider. Insecure Transmission. Then a couple of seconds after that it will say: Ciphering supported by provider. Secure transmission. I have a Sony Ericsson W880I and it irretates me a lot because the phone keeps on beeping in my ear when that message appears. Cell C has still not come back to me re this problem. HELP!!

@GhostSixFour & AdaZ, what type of SIM Cards are you using in your phones when you experience this problem? [16K, 32K, 64K, 128K, ...?]

I'm using 64k vodacom SIM. Don't want to use the link provided by vodacomdata as that merely removes the message.
