Circumcision 'not preventing HIV'
04/11/2008 12:01 - (SA)

Cape Town - Circumcised men in South Africa are currently as likely to be HIV-positive as uncircumcised, according to a study in the latest edition of the SA Medical Journal.

Its publication comes amid growing calls for governments to promote voluntary circumcision as a tool in the fight against the disease.

The study was conducted by staffers from the Medical Research Council and the Human Sciences Research Council.

They said the removal of the foreskin reduced the probability of HIV infection.

However, just over 40% of the men in their sample of 3 025 got circumcised only after their first sexual activity.

Of those circumcised after their 17th birthday, two thirds were sexually active before circumcision.

"HIV prevalence was equal among circumcised and uncircumcised men (11.1% versus 11%)," the researchers said.

When they looked only at the sexually active men in the sample, circumcision still showed no protective effect.

"The first key finding from this study was that male circumcision does not appear to be protective against HIV infection among men in South Africa, irrespective of whether they are sexually active or not," the researchers said.

There was a clear need for more research on the feasibility of a policy of mass circumcision in communities where traditional circumcision "may be done too late to offer the maximum protection, and the long-term protection of circumcision may be eroded by risky sexual behaviour".

One of the researchers, MRC statistician Catherine Connolly, told Sapa that though circumcision itself reduced the chances of HIV infection, it was "not a magic bullet".

"If you have multiple concurrent partners, eventually you'll probably sero-convert," she said.

Any mass circumcision programme would have to be one aspect of a multi-dimensional programme that also looked at aspects such as attitude and behaviour.

Circumcision is practised as a traditional coming-of-age ritual by a number of ethic groups in South Africa, including the Venda and Xhosa.

Some of South Africa's leading experts on HIV earlier this year called in a medical journal for urgent action to make circumcision part of the arsenal against the disease.

Oy vey! ...

Rabbi Tuckman: I am Rabbi Tuckman, purveyor of sacramental wine and moyel extraordinaire.
Merry Men: 'ello Rabbi!
Rabbi Tuckman: Hello boys!
Robin Hood: A moyel... I don't believe I've ever heard of that profession.
Rabbi Tuckman: A moyel is a very important guy. He makes circumcisions.
Scarlet: What, pray tell, sir, is a circumcision?
Rabbi Tuckman: It's the latest craze. The ladies love it!
Little John: I'll take one!
Ahchoo: Hey, put me down for two!
Robin Hood: I'm game. How's it done?
Rabbi Tuckman: It's a snap.
[demonstrates with a carrot and a miniature guillotine]
Rabbi Tuckman: I take my machine here, I take your little thing, I put it through this hole, and then...
[releases the blade, cutting the end off the carrot]
Rabbi Tuckman: I nip the tip! Whose first?
Merry Men: [groan]
Little John: I changed me mind!
Ahchoo: I forgot, I already got one.
Blinkin: [puts his hand in the air] Question...
[Ahchoo pulls his arm down silencing him]
Rabbi Tuckman: I gotta start working with a younger crowd.

Robin Hood: Rabbi!
Rabbi Tuckman: [sticks his head out of his tent] Who calls?
Robin Hood: It is I, Robin of Locksley! We wish to get married in a hurry!
Rabbi Tuckman: Married in a hurry? That's great! Hold on, I'm on my last customer. I'll be right out.
[goes back inside his tent, then something being chopped off is heard, followed by a man screaming. The rabbi comes back out]
Rabbi Tuckman: Put a little ice on it. You'll be fine.
[to Robin]
Rabbi Tuckman: Married in a hurry, married in a hurry! Please invite me to the briss

LOL! Robin hood: men in tights!

Okay now that you're all done.....its NOT for HIV prention....might as well take a shower, lol.

Any place I could phone or go online for more info on cost and procedure....can it be done in a docters surgery or is it a few days in hospital??????????

was the total number of sexual partners and the frequency of sex, factored into the equation when taking these studies? no i don't think so.

Of course, the original "60% protection" studies didn't take too much account of sex patterns. They did, however, give additional HIV education to the poor guys on their checkups after surgery.

I imagine you'd need to get a referral to a urologist.

I ****ing LOVE circumsition. I make sure I get one at least once a year just to trim it down a bit you know? Its like in die mode en als

Does the medical aid pay for it when it’s voluntary? I would have it as plastic surgery then?
I want a boob job…. My medical reason is my husband will not stray and give me aids….

Didn't read the entire thread, but about a year back I had the inclination to have one done due to medical reasons (I had adult phimosis)

Went to an awesome uroligist. Who suggest I could either have the procedure done (which he explained in detail, including down time etc) or I could try a steriod based cream which would help. And then if I weren't satisfied, I could come back and do the procedure.

All in all, everything would've cost around R8000 depending on the hospital charges. You're usually in and out within a day so no overnight or anything.

Think the procedure along was like R1700. Then there was the knockout gas + the dude handling it and then the "bed time" at the hospital (which was the most expensive)

Depending on your condition (as I said, didn't read the thread entirely) I'd say perhaps try alternatives first that would help instead of chopping it off. Then again, probably discussed already, there are certain positives etc surrounding a "clean" penis.

Erf

I said penis. I'm so ghey

lol. First off. There is nothing wrong with your boobs. Men who are only turned on by bigger boobs kind of have something not right in their head.

So do something else he likes to not let him stray.

Boob jobs can be paid for by medical aid provided its probably a reduction and will improve your quality of life (medical, not sexual or otherwise)

And no, I don't think circumsition is seen as a plastic surgery type and for many reasons are done for medical benefits. So its probably covered (even the voluntary ones)

don't feel insecure about your body. I'm sure if your husband was superficial he wouldn't have married because he would just trade in for a newer model every few years instead of getting hitched.

Communication is key in every relationship.

Impressive urologist. Many go for surgery as first resort, I believe.

Seconded. Boobs are cool, no matter what size. :)

It's only covered for valid medical reasons. Of course, a doctor might persuade the medical aid that the reason is medically valid.

lol at those who fell for this

somewhere i've posted stats, which say that about 80% of woman prefer circumcised men. so this could even if it was true, only be a case of men being made less attractive through this so that their number of sexual partners decreases.

sukkars !:p

LOL, spoken like a true circumcised male...I'm female and definitely prefer uncut. I bet the survey was carried out in the US...they have a tradition of chopping their little boy's foreskins off at birth.

And do they demand to check the guys penis before they agree to go out with him? "Hey, listen, I really like you, but I need to see your penis before I make up my mind."

I had it done in July when I lived in London. It cost 350 pounds and the procedure took about an hour and a half with local anaesthetic. The actual cutting took about 10 minutes, the rest was stitching.

There was no pain at all and straight after the operation I walked to the station and went home on the train.

Not just a matter of reviving an old thread after almost 5yrs, though I remained hooded, but due to some certain complications, I think I need to "de-hood". I have been experiencing some complications for the past few months when my Big Johny gets a bit bruised after each round of S*x. Mind you, I am married and have never had this before (I'm not playing away from home either:)). I'm just concerned that since I am now in my 30's whether the s*x will feel different after going under the knife? I know I l know that I need to speak to my GP about it.

So let me get this straight... you have some bruising and now you want a circumcision because you think that will somehow stop the bruising?... is circumcision going to give your penis a little suit of armour?

Seriously dude this sounds a lot like you're looking for excuses to get a circumcision. If you want one so badly go for it. I don't see the point in it and neither does the vast majority of the medical world but heck knock yourself out.
