We are running a 1 Mb diginet line between two branches with cisco 805 routers on either end and there is huge packet loss between them. we've had telkom out a few times and after much back and forth they are saying the 805 routers are not capable of going above 512k line. So far as I can see there is no limitation on the routers, any Ideas?

For as long as I can remember, I've always taken it as a rule of thumb that the 805 doesnt have the horsepower to do > 512Kbps on the serial. Check out Cisco's router performance guide, which states an 805 can only achieve 0.51Mbps throughput ...

http://www.cisco.com/web/partners/downloads/765/tools/quickreference/routerperformance.pdf

Only other reference I could find to it is ...

http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/ios/12_0/12_0xm/release/notes/rn800xm.html#wp4934

... but I dont think all versions of IOS apply the restriction (shutdown the port).

Yep, I'd also say replace the 805s with something with a bit more beef. The serial interface is capable of up to 2mbit/s, but that doesn't mean that the router has the power to actually route it...

Check the CPU usage on the routers too - chances are the processors are working overtime, which will definately indicate that the router can't cope

Limit the speed of your interfaces to 512kbs to try and avoid packet loss as the router is currently tripping over its own feet.
Until such time as you can get new routers.

805 is too slow

A Cisco 805 wil not be able to do 1 m/bit. I had a 256k line at the office, when we upgraded to a 512 I had to change the router to a 1701.
