CISP Settings for TP-Link MR600, (or any router really)

Hi,

Can anybody comment on the 'advanced' settings for my TP-Link

I was given an MTU Size of 1436 a while ago but the rest is 'default', but I am not sure if those default values are valid and/or if I should have anything else.




Also, must I/can I enable IPV6? If so what values should I use? (it is off by default)

Why that? CI advised me to go to 1436, why are you saying 1492?

If your ISP recommends a specific setting, go with that. Or test, and see if packet fragmentation occurs at 1492 or not.

Enough tools to check that out there.

Ping Test to determine Optimal MTU Size on Router

Use the command prompt to send large packets of data outbound, gradually trying smaller packets until you get a positive reply to determine the optimal MTU size.

As for IP6, you can enable, but not sure if its widely available here yet. See if you get an address or not...

Should I just leave the defaults?

I'd probably disable IGMP proxying. Unlikely you have any multicasting going on at all on your lan side.
MLD is the same thing, but for IP6, again, I'd probably disable.

Thanks, I just did the test and at 1409 I get fragmentation so I changed it to 1408, (no more fragmentation).

But this seems crazy to me that it is so lo compared to the default of 1480.

Thanks, I will leave those alone for now and change the MTU for a couple of days and see if I notice any real difference.

I'll probably leave IPV6 alone for now as well and turn it on at later stage as well.
It is not a big thing for now.

Default values are fine, V6 shouldn't matter but no harm in disabling as mentioned.
