Is anyone playing this? How are you finding it?
I have been following a channel on YouT of a guy fixing up traffic issues for other players and thought to myself:

Could you build and simulate a JHB, PTA or Cape Town on there and send it to that guy to fix? Besides possibly losing months of my life, I was thinking of giving it a go...

It was fun then it became a mod sandbox with millions of different assets which comes and goes (breaks) during every update.

I play it from time to time yeah, really enjoy it, you need to use some mods especially for traffic. Also if you have a old machine like mine the load time as atrocious but there are way's to improve it.

I know the guy you are watching, some bad traffic issues he solves chop chop.

I think yeah you could simulate places, there are custom maps for things like that.

The game doesn't have taxi's disrupting traffic and generally being assholes so you won't be able to solve traffic issues in the game.
Hehe, i actually thought about this a there's a mod made by a guy from mexico to simulate those VW Beetle cabs they have.. sure the same can be done for ours.
It's a simple mod: "AdhereToTrafficRules = False;"

You can enable that, give them right of way everywhere as well as up their speed limit.

I actually prefer Simcity 5

Sure it is not as large in scope, but it has a lot of cool things. One example, traffic changes depending in the time of day. So 5 pm it is full rush hour while say about 2 pm the roads are quieter.
Citizens actually complain if they sit in traffic for too long and stuff like that. skylines does not have that.

The commerce in skylines is also pretty much non existent. You cannot trade with other regions (as far as I know. I've built pretty big cities and never needed to trade)

Another thing in Simcity 5 is that if you lack certain jobs your citizens will commute to other regions. You can therefore built different regions that cater for different things and connect them all.

Simcity 5 got a lot of hate, but it is still (in my opinion) a better city sim than Skylines. Skylines is a city planner. Not a city sim

Bought and played it with its various DLC's, Definitely very fun especially if you enjoy City building games, haven't purchased the most recent DLC's as I don't have much time for gaming but did enjoy it when I played.

Yeah, I loved Transport Tycoon back in the day. Still played it a few months ago while on a flight with nothing else to do.. Looking forward to starting this, although not sure yet when I would have time to play.

Do you still have a very small tile to build the city on and have to be online constantly? Remember those being big issues.

I never really tried it, and I prefer Tropico as my favorite city sim.

Haven't played in a long while, but apparently they did address that issue as well as the always online issue.
Tile size was never an issue for me as the design of the game focused on regions. You can switch between regions at will and create different cities with different specializations at will that work together.

You can have a city that focuses on only commercial with no industrial that trades with a city that is only industrial so both needs are met by working together for example.

This mirrors the online mode where different people have cities in the same province that trade and work together. you can also look at the other players' cities and their progress

It's actually a damn good game and I never understood the hate.

Bloody hell, I'm installing it tonight.

Do send us some updates and how your experience is. Some people just love games that 90% of other people hate, for example I absolutely adore NFS Pro Street, remainder of the world hates it.

I think one of the best features is that you can expand buildings.
So if you built a power plant you can upgrade that power plant with more generators if your supply does not meet the demand. So you do not need to build a whole new power plant.

Same with police or schools etc.
It makes it feel more like a real live city.
Schools have limits to how many children can attend and it shows that limit.
Need more room for more children? Just plop a classroom upgrade on the existing school.
Its brilliant.

Wonder if those same features are in Skylines, I know the budget you give to each service has a direct impact on its capacity, I also like that you can do loads of landscaping and build a massive dam and hydroelectric power station, still want to try that.

Nope.
No such feature. Need more power? Build a new power plant.
The garbage and cemetery system in Skylines is the worst in any city building game.

They fill up at a massive rate. Then you need to build incinerators / crematoriums to empty them, but they get emptied bit by bit as the trucks drive between the two buildings to empty them, and while this is in progress, they are unusable. In the end you have like 10 dump sites and constantly have to micromanage them to see what needs emptying what is done emptying etc.

It's actually horrendous.

Edit:
The landscape and dam features are in skylines though. It is impressive what you can build and the freeform building of the roads and highways is massively better than Simcity.

It is in everything else it does not compare

I know what you mean here, I usually build a load of landfills far from the city but this becomes its own problem. Just had a thought wonder if you can buldoze a full facility and just build a new one, they are relatively cheap and doing so would me more cost effective than emptying them.

Nope, you can't bulldoze a full landfill (without mods anyway)

Also building highway's and off ramps in Sklines I find atrociously difficult, especially in the beginning when you don't have access to the right roads yet then you have to make do with the measly 2 lane or a 4 lane bi directional which is useless when connected to the highway.

If you build them in asset creator and just copy them that'll be easier I just thought.
