Anybody play this game yet? I'm a hug fan a Civ 4 but I'm not too sure if I would enjoy the more "focused" scale of this game.

Also, is this a standalone or an addon?

It's a standalone ... it's really just a new Colonization - I don't know why they bothered to tag the Civilization name onto it.
It's based on the CIV4 engine. I'm giving it a miss - I'm quite happy with my BTS expansion.

As am I - but I still think they could just have called it Colonization 2 (or 4, but that would confuse people) and gotten away with it.

Anyways, I'll pass too, I prefer the option of conquering the whole world :D

played it, not too impressed.. there seems to be a time limit on all the game types, even if u select no time limit?

I dont know how the comp produces all his stuff so quickly, cause i cant keep up..

maybe i just su@k.. ;)

I got BTS too, but I have never played it yet. I was waiting for the Total Realism Mod for BTS, but it looks like it was cancelled. I can't go back to playing Vanilla Civ after playing with the Total Realism Mod. I heard the History in the Making Mod for BTS comes highly recomended and is similar to TR. Hopefully I will get a chance to download it soon, maybe then I will finally install BTS.

Looks like I'm going to give colonization a miss too. Like I said in the original post the smaller scope of the game doesn't do it for me. I can't even stand to play Civ 4 with less than 12 Civs and anything smaller than a huge map.

Total Realism Mod? Where?

I played Civ until Warlords came out, and I played Warlords until BTS came out. BTS caters for my style of play much more than vanill Civ or Warlords, and I'm enjoying it much more now.

Search for it in the mod section on http://forums.civfanatics.com. Can't give exact link. The site is blocked here at work. There is not TR mod for BTS but there are other mods like History in the Making which are apparently similar.

Stupid question - but what does the TR Mod do?

I've heard about it, but I've never actually tried it out.

It's a combination of mods in one.

My favourite features:

It tweaks the rates of research, production, religion, city growth, culture, almost everything in order create an even and balanced pace to the game. I always felt that in Vanilla Civ4 I flew through the tech tree in the early game making units obsolete before they were used or even produced.

It includes the Ethnic Diversity mod, which adds more unit skins to the game. So, African warriors will look African, German WW2 rifleman will wear the uniform of a German WW2 rifleman, etc. It just looks cooler.

Adds espionage and mercenaries.

There is no TR for BTS. But, there are other mods that incorporate other smaller mods into one big one. TR was just the most complete one.

BTS has espionage, and enhanced religion and corporations in a big way. Much more complex (and fun :)). As for research rates - which speed do you play your games at? More often than not I'm focusing on the expansion of my empire - I'm not too concerned with what type of units I might not use (upgrades ftw!!).

Ah ok ... but in that case BTS has a lot of those in. Ethnic Diversity and Espionage to be specific ... I'm not so sure about Mercs though.

I tend to play my games at the slowest speed ... I like to take my time :)

In that case, have you looked at this ModPack for BTS?

HephMod is a mod-pack that emphasizes historical flavor and realism within the bounds of smooth and challenging gameplay. To this end, HephMod's guiding principle is, "More is not always better." I try to keep feature creep to a minimum and thoroughly playtest new features to optimize the player experience. This mod is designed to be played on EPIC speed.

Features:
Longer Epic game with reduced unit costs, giving more time in each era to play with military units
Increased ability to support large armies in the early game
Unique religions and increased unhappiness due to non-state religions
Serious reworking of unit stats (originally based on Wes' Medieval Mod)
A handful of new units: Skirmishers and Light Cavalry in the early and middle eras
More distinctive trait abilities for civs to give playing different civs a more unique feel
Additional flavor units
Civics almost totally reworked based on an advantage/disadvantage model
A Bit More Natural mod (a resource mod that makes resource appearance parameters more realistic)
Includes Revolution Mod by jdog
Inquisitor mod (bmarnz and OrionVeteran) merged, with some changes
StackAid (including the "hero" promotions from Zuul's Promotions&Perks)
A new Civics category (Military) and one new Civic in each category
abbamouse's realistic religions is back (without Zoroastrianism for the time being, however)
I'm downloading now - gonna give it a bash.

Let me know what you think of this mod. Most important features to me are the first two.

Also, TR has a huge earth map, with all the Civs, that had barbarian cities (Carthage, Babylon) to prevent Civs from expanding too quickly. Does this mod have a map like this included, or you know where I can get it separately?

I liked the Colonization remake. Still prefer the original though :)

I like the focused scale of the game, because if I want epic - the only thing that can satisfy me is Europa Universalis III (though Victoria was hundreds better than that)!
