An inner city regeneration project is set to rejuvenate public areas of Hillbrow, Berea and Yeoville while creating over 1000 jobs.

Pic courtesy: SA Tourism Launched by the Johannesburg Development Agency (JDA), the five-month project will see the congested city streets of downturn Joburg transformed into attractive and safe public areas decorated with public art and lush greenery. The project aims to induce further private investment in the area and to encourage residents to beautify their own properties.

The project will involve the upgrading of parks with the emphasis on public safety and security. Public toilets will also be refurbished.

Streets such as Pretoria and Kotze in Hillbrow have been identified as high streets and will receive the full sweep of upgrades including different types of paving, special parking bays, benches, bins, new bus shelters and guard rails.

Streets will also be greened with indigenous plants and trees. In a separate project, closed circuit television cameras will be installed in specific areas.

The project is expected to create up to 1200 jobs. Nomi Muthialu and Associates (NMA), a social strategist company charged with the skills audit for the project are looking to employ the services of skilled contractors and construction workers. Employment will be available in bricklaying, kerbing, paving, concrete work, pipe laying and plumbing.

"Because of the fast-track nature of this project, only people with experience will be employed," said Julian Drew of NMA.

I hope to see Durban follow this trend.

I hope they don't forget about those in wheelchairs during this nice "upgrade"
