I saw this advert on television about getting free credit report for free, clear score I registered very easy to register. I checked my credit score it's 638 don't know if it's good or bad, but I think it's average. I checked all my previous accounts everything look good. One strange thing I picked up is I bought my car through the bank, but I didn't see that on my credit report I only saw the Jet Store account. It clearly stated I have no loans, maybe someone can tell me why it came back like that.

But overall I'm happy with what I saw my name is clear.

The financing bank for your car probably listed your account on Transunion and Experian.

Your credit score is low - you ideally want a score of 760+

Yeah not happy with "average risk" what can I do to improve it. I'm have two debts Jet Store account and loan for the car. I recently closed OK furniture account.

Compuscan score bands:

605 or less = Very High Risk
606 – 621 = High Risk
622 – 641 = Average Risk
642 – 667 = Low Risk
667 or more = Minimum

Minimize your debt exposure and pay off everything.

I checked again it just updated I did see the loan for the car, multichoice, tracker and King Price insurance. I think it's time to close the Jet store account, others I have no choice.

My credit score is 639 out of 705.

That is weird - I've never known for a credit score to only be out of 705. Usually out of 999 I think???

Where could one check your credit score? Transunion only generates a credit report without the score and wants to charge R80 for the score. Not THAT important to me.

Go to Google search clear score South Africa and register its so easy. I checked mine there I had my doubts but it's legit, saw all my current and previous debts. The balance on my car payment and jet store account.

Don't know why is it like that but I agree I need to improve my credit score. It seems you know more about credit scores, is it true if I apply for credit and they keep checking my credit profile does that affect it negatively.

Checking your credit score should not impact your credit profile, but applying for credit with multiple financial credit providers within a short window does impact your credit score. It will also flag their credit departments and you will most likely not be approved because of it.

Also I see this is an Experian based credit report. I was referring to Transunion

No credit scores are really "out of" anything. The way the scorecard is designed is to rank order risk and you can do that anywhere on the number scale. I work in credit risk modelling and I've seen scorecards with ranges from -10 to 10, 400 to 800, 0 to 21 etc.

Also, when building a credit scorecard you don't specify the range, that is a function of the data you have. You specify the score that has a certain odds of defaulting (often 50:1) and then a number of point to double those odds. Then where the range of possible scores end up is completely a function of your data.

Clear Score seems dodge... They want your current salary so they can ensure you receive offers relevant to you...
Wasn't there a thread about some dude that used a dodgy insurance quote website and ended up getting debited for a subscription service?

I hope that's not the case here.

What is my credit score out of?
Your credit score goes from 0-705.

We put your score into different bands depending on how high it is:

Score Band
0 - 527 Very poor
528 - 602 Poor
603 - 649 Fair
650 - 669 Good
670 - 705 Excellent
These bands are an indication of how good your credit score is, however the score that we show you, just like any other score, is just a guide and even people with the highest credit score can be rejected for credit.

For those considering using these guys, from their t's and c's:

"You licence us to use any information, data, materials or other content (collectively “ Content”) you provide to us through our website or that we obtain on your behalf as part of the services we provide (such as your credit information) and you agree that we can use, modify, display, distribute and create new material using the Content so that we may provide our Services to you and for any other purposes set out in these Terms, including our ."

Use this instead: https://www.transunion.co.za/assistance/free-credit-report

Transunion is the market leader, so most people will refer to their report (which I find a lot cleaner than the Experian website+report). You can get one free credit report from ALL bureaus once a year ... it's the law.

That shows you a report, but not your credit score. Thus it is nearly useless unless you're worried about whether you've been reported for defaulting or anything of the sort.
