Location
Durban, KZN, South Africa, Earth.
So my friends iPhone 6 got picked off of her after completing the Amashova Cycle race. We managed to track it into Durban and later near a house in Greenwood Park, before being switched off.
The phone was insured so recovery would just be a risk not worth taking.

I managed to get the phone into lock and lost mode whereapon the app asks for my phone number if found.

...and so the fun starts...

I get an SMS seemingly from "Apple Support" saying the phone has been located at xyz address and I can go ahead and log on to http;//location-find.online/index.php/login to access the location.

I immediately suspected fishing and found a disused laptop to click the link.
A legit looking "Find my iphone" page comes up requesting Apple ID log in details
I enter Username: DoUThinkImStUPID
Password Fu2ManyTimesOver
...no doubt error 404 but I believe they got a message

So every day I get at least one of these SMS's ....the first few were Local numbers and the latest is a UK +44 Number.

So Just a warning, be sharp!:mad:

Well done, it's worth sharing this with friends and fam to be aware of these types of fishing attempts.

Surely you can log in at https://www.icloud.com/ and trace the device using the find my phone portal?

The phone is completely and utterly useless other than for spare parts without your friends apple id log in details. If it linked to her apple id it cannot be used without entering her log in details.

wait, what... how did the ne'er-do-well managed to get hold of your phone number in order to phish you?

Presume using the lost and found feature. When the mode is activated and the lost phone is switched on a message pops up with a number to contact in the event that said phone is found.

The thief realizing the phone is useless without the correct apple id credentials is now trying to solicit them from the victim via the contact number displayed on screen.

Makes sense as that would be the only way they can get around the Activation lock, otherwise the phone is dead in the water.]

But definitely report the serial number to Apple as stolen.

Many years ago at one of my previous companies they stole a few Dell laptops and we reported the serial numbers to Dell. Like a year later someone (presumably third party it was sold to) tried to log a support case against the laptop and Dell picked it up.

They ended up tracking these guys down to a warehouse full of stolen goods.

Did you read his post at all?

That's exactly what he did.

They are trying to phish the friends Apple ID details from them now so that the phone is no longer useless.

Ahh, ok.

Pity you can't do a reverse phish...

I meant if OP was looking for a legitimate route to check the phones status, as opposed to the phishing link.

The problem is, even though they cannot use the phone as a phone, these then go to the pakkies where it get taken apart. They use them for spare parts - casing, screen, battery and camera modules etc. The only thing I believe they can't use is the actual main/logic board - because that is now locked.

Hi all.... yes the phone is still off on the legit find my iPhone site.
I have only had one new attempt to phish the Apple ID and password, so I think as above it's destined to become spare parts.

They're using a third party to phish the details. I doubt the thief is even getting the details you send. Otherwise i'd suggest you send the address. So what address was it traced to... you wouldn't be saying they ARE the thief, all you'd be saying is that Apple traced it to that address
It's likely it was sold before it even found it's way to Durbs...
