Did Gareth Cliff overstep the line in terms of how far one can go on-air?

Point is there is a choice, nobody is being forced to listen to it. If you don't like the crap that SABC TV broadcasts, you change the channel right? Same principle here.

Also advertising revenues cover more than the government subsidy they receive, so the portion of our taxes that directly go towards 5FM is pretty minuscule. It's like giving a beggar 50c and telling him that he's now your bitch for the day, despite whatever money he would have made on his own.
 
OK, i only read to page 8 and got bored....

it is funny how the non-believers like to come out and throw stones and generalise. Think about it for a moment......these socalled "christian-zealots" are a small number in the christian community. Only thing is that they are more public about their thoughts therefore everyone must be like that?

I am a christian and don't like little cliffie at all, but doesn't have a problem with what he said, that's his opinion and good for him.
 
P.S. It's only freedom of speech when you allow a person to say things that annoy, or insult, you. As for hate speech, come on, he was not hateful in the slightest; the only hate is coming from the so-called "righteous / devout" idiots. Oh goodness, I called people idiots, I must be sooooo full of hate .. but then I am a "moral genocidal psychopath" .. I even come with several evil laughs, for the seven deadly sins :)

cos his boss was a bangbroek that's why. he was more worried about how much money he would lose and what damage it would have to the company, instead of standing up for what the guy said.

Gareth Cliff did NOT say God is petty... This is the crucial misconstruction that has caused all this upheaval - people hear what they wish to hear instead of what was said!! They do it all the time and seemingly remain unaware of it!!!

keep your feelings to yourself about this sort of thing if you on the air

im an athiest but i dont around telling ppl this or that about their GOD

Why not? Religion doesn't deserve special protection.

Honestly... if you understand the comment then there is no argument. I remember in Logic 101 we proved that God is a goat. Many people were initially offended until the lecturer explained that without belief in the premise you need not believe the conclusion. "If God has such an ego" - Gareth Cliff never stated that God had an ego, and if you don't believe he does then he is not petty.

Its simple logic people and straight forward English - IF is an important word!

So you're implying that if he HAD said "God is petty" then all this religious backlash would have been justified?

I don't like that idea, because it reinforces a belief that religion is somehow off-limits for ridicule or even criticism.

If you can't criticise a religion, then you have to completely abide by it. And how can you simulataneously abide by three Abrahamic religions, one polytheistic religion, one religion based on the theory of enlightenment and all the sundry smaller religions? They are mutually incompatable!


Now, before people start equating religious criticism with hate speech, let's have a look at some examples of each, shall we?

Hate speech:
"All you atheists are going to rot in hell."
"One settler, one bullet."

Religious criticism:
"Religious adherence is becoming obsolete, as we are technologically advanced such as to no longer need supernatural explanations for natural forces. We are also enlightened enough to appreciate the immediate harmful effects of 'immoral' actions, without needing archaic threats of punishment in the afterlife to dissuade us from acting improperly."

Okay, that was a bit academic. But even if you compare blasphemy with hate speech, the differences are quite easy to spot:

Hate speech:
"All you atheists are going to rot in hell."

Blasphemy:
"Deities are not necessarily as perfect as you would have us believe." (This could be more succintly expressed as "God is petty" or "Allah is a pig".)

Whether GC blasphemed or not is immaterial. He's allowed to, and so is everyone else.
