Clone HDD

Hi
How do I clone my HD onto a USB connected external drive? Have Win 7 64 bit. It keeps telling me win can't clone through a USB port.

Boot from a different OS and then try it.

There are Linux Bootable tools that allow cloning of hard drives. Possible look at Hirens Boot CD

I use a USB flash drive setup with DOS to boot [Yes, DOS ] whereupon I use Norton Ghost to do the job. Works perfectly.

I'm a first time Clonezilla user, actually haven't even used it yet just downloaded it.

Please can someone give me the run down?
I am buying a new HDD for my laptop and I will like to clone my current laptop HDD to the new one (I have a single HDD with 2 partitions).

What I have:
2.5" 250gig HDD (Current Laptop HDD in laptop, 2 partitions)
2.5" 500gig HDD (New Laptop HDD)
2.5" USB powered external enclosure
Clonezilla Live on USB

We have a CloneZille Server build to increase productivity in regard to restoring, backups, data recovery / disaster recovery and system builder preferences in regard to deployment. The most appreciated device in the whole company saves enormous amounts of time.

But there is various clone tools available. Most companies I know uses Acronis, Paragon… and Norton Ghost

You dont really need a guide, i would advise to rather put CloneZilla ISO on a CD then only have the internal hadd and External HDD connected.
the 250GB keep it internal, and connect the 500GB via the USB external drive.

all i can say is be carefull, conezilla can sometimes be confusing since its text based its easy to clone the wrong drive.
Atleast you are going from a Smaller drive to a bigger so you cant fit a bigger clone onto a smaller drive and you can use the drive size in the description to know what's what
If you clone the whole drive you will end up with 3 Partitions on the 500GB, 3rd will be blank space which you can just repartition and format.

I used Seagate Discwizard to upgrade my previous laptop and even for an IT ignoramus like me, it was quite simple - not sure if it will work on drives other than seagate though....

I do not know if you exceeded in cloning your HDD yet, but this software http://www.macrium.com/reflectfree.aspx is recommended by Seagate professionals as an imminent disk failure final resort to clone your HDD.

The free version should provide everything you require.

We use a commercial product for business called Acronis Backup & Recovery Advanced Server and Advanced Workstation.

If my drive was failing I would not touch that software, I would instead be using GNU ddrescue

So I got my HDD today, got home used the Live CD (the Live USB didn't want to boot on my laptop).
The text based based interface can be confusing but I manage to clone my HDD with no hassles.

I generally just use 'dd' in linux which is a command line tool but for other people I recommend clonezilla, I also keep the image on my HDD and a copy on disk in my drawer.
