Hi guys.

I'm asking it in this section as it has taken off so it's not "Off topic" no more :p

I will be starting a clothing label for my wife. So she can leave her dead end job. Just about all the homework has been done. This includes T-shirt suppliers, printers, marketing and storage. With most of the hurdles out of the way I need to know how I go about registering a clothing label. The registration must include the logo and name of the trademark.

Pls guys, I would like to get this rolling asap :)

PB, its a cutthroat industry, some CMT's can produce shirts for 20c, my g/f worked for a major international label and her mother works for one of the major suppliers to the franchises here in SA.

Her best bet would be to get hold of a reliable and cheap CMT that will do small quantities at first.

Where is she planning on selling the clothes?

Good luck... really hard market you are trying to crack, but register your name like you register a trademark and company name.

She will open her own shop as well as online. There is a few marketing tricks she has going already which should provide enough publicity. Thing is, this whole venture is being started on Cash. Thus keeping the overheads low and have no royalties or other expenses like loans and what not to pay off.

The way this is going to happen is:

Suppliers will produce: T-shirts, jeans, suit jackets, underwear and whatever else. This is then to be branded and sold under her label. This we have already got going and she has suppliers for the above already. (The internet is a great place :p) We just need to wait for the samples to see the quality of the goods.

Our biggest hurdle now is getting the label registered. I have tried searching online but only get help for other countries. I need to know how one goes about registering a label locally.

Just like that ?

So i need to go and see a Lawyer who specializes in Trademark law to check availability and registration ?

Who will do the branding?

If i remember correctly you don't need a lawyer, but you have to go with something like 20 names, and the first available one you can have, but leagal advice will be good.

Who will do the branding?

We have gotten quotes from one printer (Screen Printing) in Durban and one in Jo'Burg. They need the designs to give more accurate figures but they have quoted us for front only, Front and back. Label front/Picture back. Which gave us an idea of what we'll be paying. But it will differ from design to design (Detail and what not)

That even includes a custom Tag :p

I ran the idea past my wife about a week ago and she's already sorted out most of these things. She is very excited :) So I'm happy

Well good luck, if you ever need any help / advice give me a shout and i'll pass it along for feedback :)

Is she going to be designing the clothes? Or just sticking her brand on already designed clothes?

Adam's and Adam's....But first do some homework, i'm sure we didn't use them until eskom sued us for our name.

Hi Pooky

This might come later. Currently it is branding of current designs sent out by manufacturers. Meaning the designs will be original just not her own but sold under her label.

Hope it makes sense :o

Thank you I will definately speak to them once the new year starts. I appreciate your help.

But will other retailers be selling the same clothes as your wife?

A&A is helluva expensive though, so too Spoor & Fischer :(

There was a firm in Woodmead just can't recall their name at the moment...

Thanks man :)

We are going to run a few print tests in the new year. This should include about 20 or so T-shirts with different designs. What better way than to dish them out to MyBB forumites to give us feedback on...

This will only happen once the label is registered though ;)

I have no idea. We are importing the designs so it's a possibillity. Once the business picks up we might be able to sign an exclusivity deal with the manufacturers. But this is the start up only. No manufacturer will sign over exclisivity unless you order big big big numbers ;)

Is your name "Load Shedding" clothing? :p :D

LOLZ, no they registered after us (admin fsked up)but because they are bigger and have more money they sued us for the same name. :( The business did'nt last long after that.:(
