Hi Guys

Just a quick question how good is cloud computing in SA? Reason I ask is our head office in Australia is looking to move our online program onto the cloud to make it faster and more stable world wide.

If you have decent connectivity it might be ok. I'm developing a small Azure cloud based solution and have been quite impressed with how well it works. Using Europe North data centre.

Depends on the kind of Cloud really and who the provider is.

You could have a hybrid cloud which replicates to a server on your local network, which means you'd just access the real cloud outside of your business which is what most people go for.

On the other hand there are full cloud platforms like Amazon EC2 that have data centres in every location you can imagine and you'll be connecting to the closest one most of the time, unless it's a failsafe situation.

All really depends on what they plan to spend.

We running on a 3Mbps speed atm

If that is your current bandwidth, then any of the bigger cloud providers should be able to give you significantly more. As kripstoe mentioned, the European DC's will give the best latency, due to all the cables running from SA northwards around both sides of Africa, but latency to a DC in the USA is usually not far behind as well.
