Ok so I am looking to get an external drive that can allow me to access all its content on my TVs through my house.

I have a TP-link deco mesh system so there is Wifi throughout the house with cabled connections to my TVs. Its irritating to have multiple external drives and then swapping them and finding out whats on what.

So I'd like the drive to have a fairly large capacity like 8 Tb upwards and some advice on how to set it up or if I'm wasting my time.

I have a xiomi android stick on 1 tv and a nova android box on the other.

Is this possible and worth the money ?

Im also not sure if this is cloud storage lol so lets say "cloud" storage

A small Synology Nas will do the job

Many routers can share USB drives,or you get a Pi and set up like that. Plex or just use Kodi pointed to the network storage

wait guys. Dumb it down for me with links to products on takealot and explain these things.

Synology Nas
Never heard of this before

Will this work for the TV ?

Dont understand this at all

Get something that runs a Plex Server natively.

huh?

Guys :eek: ... Im medical im pretty much noob with IT. Try and make it easy for me lol

also is 3 multiplugs safe on 1 plug point ? all this tech requires a lot of plug points

Synology nas, it’s a box, that you out hard drives in, it runs plex, copy your stuff on to it, and let plex do the voodoo , your tv’s tablets, etc speak its language , if you pay for a plex licence , you can even access it out in the wild, like you would Netflix

Buy a Rpi, plugin your externals into the pi, mount the externals to directories, setup samba share. Done.
On xiaomi install kodi.
Mount directories under movies.
Done

That said, a single drive version is R2900

If it’s just media, and you not tooooo concerned about loosing your precious media/movies if the drive dies , then this is a good fit

Just go the raspberry pi route and buy bigger externals if needs be. One can even setup rsync backups between drives for backup purposes.

I’ve been hunting for a pi, battling to find, and at the price of the ones on bob , I can get a synology device

Could get yourself one of these boys...

I personally wouldn't because I'm a nerd, but if you are a "buy it off the shelf and plug it in" kind of person like it seems then they would be ideal.

Not a fan of the WD Mycloud Home stuff.

Have one, gave me endless kak, it is lying in a box somewhere now, replaced by a Synology NAS device, 100 times better.

Whats the cost ?
Sorry, was at clients.

See post #14.

If you are concerned about a single drive, they have dual drive versions as well, of course cost goes up.

Which area are you in, I got a really good deal on Synology and drives at Linkqage in Cape Town.
