Cloud storage for local network

Not a fan of the WD Mycloud Home stuff.

Have one, gave me endless kak, it is lying in a box somewhere now, replaced by a Synology NAS device, 100 times better.

I don’t dislike Synology they just seem a bit weak on processing at the lower end price brackets.

It should at least be one that can run the Docker apps etc.

OP wants to run Docker apps?

And anything in lower price brackets will be limited, but it might still be exactly what someone needs.

Synology nas, it’s a box, that you out hard drives in, it runs plex, copy your stuff on to it, and let plex do the voodoo , your tv’s tablets, etc speak its language , if you pay for a plex licence , you can even access it out in the wild, like you would Netflix
It runs Plex but you need to be a plex pass subscriber for it to run Plex well.

He won’t know they are running in Docker.

But Docker or otherwise I wouldn’t spend that kind of money on something that can’t at least run Plex Media Server and a few other nice to haves.

For R2200 he's dreaming - I bought 4 of those for R400 each (new back in the day).

It's ALSO ancient by now, came out in 2010 - so its 13 years old.

The CPU is weak as ****, nowhere near worth it at that money.

While the price is high it does come with drives.

Also the CPU is way more powerful than any off the shelf NAS.

Spending the same money new you won’t find any level of equivalence.

Install UnRAID on it and you have a monster.

I happily stream UHD Remuxes off my even older N36L via Plex running in Docker on UnRAID as well as another 10 or so other containers with an 18TB completely redundant array.

Do you have a better suggestion for OP?

More than capable NAS with 8TB of HDD for R2200.

I'll wait.

I use JellyFin on an old office HP Elitedesk 800 desktop connected cable connected to one of my Deco S4 nodes. Put all my media on that machine, install the app on my phone/smart tv/media box....problem solved. We're just 2 in the house but we're both streaming at 1080p simultaneously without issue. Seemed to me like the cheapest option at the time.

So does this plex thing have to be paid. I only need to access my stuff in my house

Can I do this for my desktop ? Do I need a separate computer?

So can I just install plex and use my existing drives?
