Hi Guys,

need some advice here,

couple of weeks back my clutch cable snapped just after the scamral gantry on rivonia (uphill)
I drive a kia picanto old shape

after a bit of hassles, managed to get a tow home, and the next day took the car in for a replacement cable,
cable was fixed, clutch super high but working,

as the weeks go by, clutch gets gradually lower and today in traffic I actually can hear it creaking like its about to snap again,

is there some adjustment I need to do first? is there maybe a better quality cable I should buy?

or is there a easier way to make sure if it snaps to keep driving?

If it was set too high you could have stretched it by pushing it all the way to the floor. The feckers should have asked if you were happy with how it was set.

Had a similar issue on my bike, I'm not sure how to do the cluchless shift in a car but on the bike i get a rolling start (forwards please...) start it without revving the engine, then when i get to roughly 6 ½th revs i drop the accelerator and when the engine is running at about 4th revs I simply slip it into the following gear. it works when gearing up and gearing down, you just need to remember that stopping is pretty difficult, you need to slip her into neutral or else you will keep going or hit a tree/rock/car/boat etc... whatever is either in front of you or next to you.

I do not suggest doing this in traffic!

apparently I found out that its impossible to do when your uphill:p
burn out the starter motor/ worse damage to the engine.

how do you adjust it, or can they only do it when they change cable?

Actually, it might be self-adjusting in which case I don't know - take it back to the mechanic.

Otherwise check where it goes through the fire wall from the engine compartment. If there's a threaded tube with a couple of nuts on it. Loosen the nuts to adjust.

Might just have routed it wrong. Thus is snapped again. They have to redo it and make sure it routed properly with no sharp bends in the cable.

thats the thing, its been okay for a while, and not yet snapped,

but its creaking like its about to snap, not sure if its going to snap any time soon.

and its really hard to get to actually see anything.

O sorry I read it wrong.

Maybe let the people who installed it have a look. I'm pretty sure it's a routing issue.

Normally if the "height" of the pedal changes so drastically and suddenly that's a sign of the clutch itself having issues.

If it just changed once and then settled it might have not been installed correctly and then slipped into place where it has stayed. Mine also creaks like a mother****er months after replacing it and considering it's a metal cord leveraged over a hinge of sorts I'm not too surprised.

You can adjust it quite easily if you have half a clue where to find the other end of the cable inside the bonnet. Get someone else to step on the clutch while you have the bonnet open and it should be pretty easy to spot.

Normally it's a nut on a screw end with another lock nut to keep it in place. Loosen the first and then adjust the second one no more than two turns in either direction.

Drive the car and then adjust it again by two turns (or back four turns if you did it wrong way the first time).

You just don't want to be scratching any gears while the clutch is engaged.

How do you mount a clutch cable upside down? That doesn't make sense?

Or do you mean wrong way round? That should also be impossible as the two ends are different.

Correct - shouldn't be possible unless the Koreans are doing something very strange that I don't know about! :p

Google "kia picanto clutch cable images" - seems the bulkhead side is an offset angled bracket.

Weird I don't see anything like that. All seems pretty universal to me.

But surely even with an offset bracket the cable still just sits in a sleeve and should move around freely. Unless you mean the whole bracket was installed wrong...which makes one wonder how the hell that's even possible.
