clutch cable snapping

just drove it now, its fine but theres plenty of play in the pedal, ie: I can grab the one end of the pedal and its completely loose
still if I press on the pedal it release the clutch but I constantly hearing that click of it disengaging.

also checked under the bonnet , theres the one cable that connected to the gearbox, that apparently they swapped and you loosen or tighten it to adjust the clutch, checked it its still connected, tried tightening it, gets a bit better then a few presses later, goes back to feeling "slack"

would any mechanic be able to advise me if its connected properly? and if it does snap, is it possible to drive?
I heard its extremely damaging to the car to drive without the clutch.

Seriously sounds to me like the clutch itself is on the way out and that the cable isn't actually the problem.

Don't drive it if it snaps unless you absolutely can't do without, but prevention is better than cure so take it to someone before that happens.

I don't see how anyone could get this wrong, I've replaced the clutch cable in my Corsa myself and although it's a mission it's not really very difficult.
 
thanks guys, gonna try to get to a mechanic, before it snaps completely,

as for the clutch being worn, its a possibility, as I very often sit in woodmeads traffic jams, but I never hold the car with the clutch

if it does snap, whats the best way to drive it with no clutch to speak of?
 
I have the same car, i once bought a clutch cable for R300~R400 from Joburg Korean Spares, they sell original + aftermarket spares (i went for the original), call them on 011-3340763. Take it to your trustworthy mechanic and have it replaced

thats exactly where I brought mine from, I even brought original.
only problem is its quite low today, feels like the cable is stretched, I can still disengage the clutch but it feels like its gonna snap anytime soon.
 
took it to a mechanic now, adjusted the cable, clutch high as it should be again,
will see as time goes on it if goes down and gets loose again,

could it be the cable is stretching itself?
 
If it was a dud cable it's not impossible that it might have stretched once at a weak point, but it certainly shouldn't be stretching with time.

More likely as was said before that it wasn't routed properly and then later slipped into place making it longer.

asked the guy now, he says is it routed properly, says all is as it should be,

would love to know from somebody else who own this kind of car if this ever happens to them?
and if they can take a picture or 2 showing how their cable is routed, so I can just confirm.

never managed to find a haynes manual for this car.....
 
long story short guys, yes cable was routed wrong,
was actually chafing the hole where it comes from the engine, full of small metal shavings

apparently there needs to be a small rubber part that protects against this happening and this was not fitted properly

driving yesterday felt weird, like I need the foot of an elephant to release the clutch to change gear.:p

was gonna snap quite soon and strand me AGAIN!!!!!!

Glad it's sorted. And even more glad that I was right :p
 
It is possible to fit the cable upside down, then the inner cable runs at a very sharp angle, cuts through the bracket that mounts onto the firewall. Eventually the inner cable snaps.

yip, had that happen before, even worse was on our sentra, when the mounted the clutch disk wrong....
didn't check to see what goes to the gearbox, and what to the engine, didnt check the writing on the part......

so I believe anything is possible....
 
I own one of these miserable little cars.

The clutch cable has a bad design where it goes through the firewall. The angle is too great causing it to chafe and finally jam. I had a clutch cable repaired by re-manufacturing the end buckle on the clutch pedal side. This worked great until it broke at the clutch housing side. I then replaced the small pin with a sturdy bolt and nut. As both the buckles were now sturdy and secure the cable had no choice but to chafe through at the firewall. There's nothing you can do. Just keep a spare cable handy.:twis

Does anyone know where I can get a work shop manual for this car? It has suddenly decided to loose power and use a ton of fuel.
