Clutch Pedal slipped

Yoh... you guys weren't kidding.

Just been quoted 23k with non-dealership parts!

Clutch kit + Flywheel + Slave + new oil etc. + 2 days labour
6000+6500+2000+800+7600 = 23,000


Will check with these clutch guys in Milnerton just to see.

Sounds like it will keep going a little bit more though? Right??

Why do they want to replace the whole clutch and flywheel now??
Be careful a guy a know had his slave fail and the unscrupulous mechanic did what they are quoting you, slave plus full clutch overhaul, also near R20k on a Korean run around.

They (on inspection at KC Autos) think they need to be done together... so getting a 2nd opinion from West Coast I think.

Anyone else I should be asking in Cape Town?

How much mileage is on the vehicle and do you drive quite hard?
An excellent mechanic in Kenilworth is Alan Edwards Motors, old school quality, give them a try as well.

If the slave cylinder is leaking fluid out, and it's inside the bell housing (I don't know if this is the case) there's a chance the clutch and flywheel are contaminated.

If it's a gearbox out job, dependant on mileage, it may be worth doing anyway.

For context, minor service plus lower control arms on my subaru here in the UK was over £1200 - so 20k is ballpark for an Audi imho.

I’m not disputing the price but that the clutch is being replaced as well, a bit of brake fluid on a clutch isn't the end of the world unless it’s been leaking for months and the master reservoir has been continuously topped up, which is not the case here.

I think we're at about 120,000km at 12 years old (2012?)-- so not massive.
Not driven hard, but driven lots of short distances (taking kids to school and short erands etc) - so that might be more 'weary' on a clutch?

If that's the original clutch, it's probably due for replacement anyway. No credible service technician would quote on half a job, which could potentially fail in the next 12 months.

My car has an automatic transmission, which is a whole different world for maintenance.

Thanks for the info and recommendations everyone.

Right now I'm already looking at knocking it down to R17k vs. R24k from going with West Coast vs. normal mechanic! (mainly from them doing this all the time, so much less labour!); maybe more if they think the slave or flywheel is okay etc...

2012 Audi Q3 2.0tdi

According to Google that has the clutch slave cylinder inside the bell housing so the gearbox has to come out to replace it and hence doing the clutch at the same time isn't a terrible idea considering the vehicles mileage. You just have to hope now that the flywheel doesn't need replacement and it doesn't have a dual mass flywheel because those can get rather pricey.

Or old brake fluid or leaky pipes/fittings. I had the same issue and it was one pipe that was leaking.

some okes are chancers, ne? 17K for a clutchjob, what is it made of gold????

all that dough for a cardboard box saying audi or VW

last time I got lucky found my Clutch kit from takealot of all places, valeo kit, without the valeo branding, but some local okes in the East rand where Im from in JHB,

millennium clutch, think they even have a website, might find it there for a quarter of the price,

if I have learned anything with Cars over the years of owning them, is Shop around and then shop around a bit more till you find a price you like,
prices vary quite wildly

Google says it does unfortunately have a dual mass fly wheel and they typically have to get replaced with the clutch and can't be skimmed. If it is indeed a dual mass flywheel make sure they are replacing it with one because you can also get normal flywheels but they make a lot more vibration if used in place of the single mass and can make driving very unpleasant.

Its the safe bet based on the age and milage to avoid comebacks.
The gearbox should be good for another 100k+ if they do a good job then.

They will only be able to tell if its not needed once they have taken everything apart and most will then just do the clutch kit based on you already agreeing.

my wife took the car in to West Coast and Clutch, she told them that the clutch pedal occassionally got stuck, they tested everything and replace a leaky pipe. R900 something later, it was fixed.

Why did they say that, the two systems should be independent, if the clutch is ok why have you been having issues with the clutch pedal?
