Hmmm now why did they use them? (assuming you talking about the USA, which is not a state but a country) Because they were attacked unprovoked ---UN- PROVOKED--by lunatics who also carried out suicide missions much the same as the terrorists of today.
Not defending Japan but I've been reading some articles that it was not entirely unprovoked. Not in a military manner but more a foreign policy one to do with Japan's economy and I think oil. Can't remember it anymore so will go do some digging again.
Look, the guy looked like an ass clown on her show, what did she not ask , or which show should he have gone on? If he's a douche on CNN or BBC or FOX, whats the difference?

He started out looking rather abashed, actually, as if reality was finally catching up to him. He pleaded, floundered, stumbled, sweated and looked nervous as all hell. When asked to explain what charges MDC MP Roy Bennet was actually facing, he spent a full 90 seconds mumbling indistinctly before eventually saying it was something related to bringing arms into the country.
A despot in control of his faculties would have been able to dodge a question like that without any effort at all. What we saw on Thursday was a despot who knows what a failure he is. Perhaps the high point of the discussion was when he spent another minute pleading that all African leaders are equally respected and that there was no way that he could feel jealous about the praise Mandela got in the 90s. No way at all.
Mind you, Zuma managed to be even less impressive, somehow. When asked what his government is doing with regards to AIDS and crime, his answers were almost identical both times:
Z: We have set up a committee to examine the problem.
CNN: ...and?
Z: They have formed a Task Team! [waits for applause]
CNN: ...and?
Z: Er ... and now we have a Five Point Plan!
CNN: Let's move on...

The purpose of nuclear weapons was deterence, mutally assured destruction. This worked fine with USSR and China because they didnt want to be destroyed any more than NATO countries.
However, with the likes of Iran, they are likely to use it regardless of the consequences to themselves.
Cant see how this will end in a good way, unfortunatly. I dont think it will go nuclear, though. The day Iran tests its first nuclear weapon or Israel/NATO are sure they have one, Israel and/or NATO will bomb them. Then it will be full on war. Worse than Irag or Afghanistan. Hope I'm wrong.
