Hi,

My girlfriend and I are looking at getting away for about 3 weeks in late April, and we've decided we want to take a mini road trip down the KZN coast - speding a handfull of days here and there. We were thinking of starting north up at St. Lucia, and moving down the coast as far as about Scottsburgh and then maybe making a stop in the Drakensberg area on our way back to JHB.

The problem is neither of us has been anywhere near the coast in a good 15 years, and as such have no idea of where the better (as in more activiies and sights) places to stay are along that stretch of coast. So any suggestions of places to stay and places of interest in those areas would be welcome. We're thinking of about 18 days, split into 4 or possibly 5 destinations - so 3 or 4 days per stop.

Any suggestions on where to stay, where to go, what to see and do?

Regards,
I.

Budget? Before we start going off on a tangent.

What activities/sights are you after?

Form what I have heard St. Lucia has degraded into tappetville, I have not been there in years so I cannot confirm this.

May I suggest you start higher up at Kosi Bay.

That place is by far the most awesome costal place in South Africa if not Africa (Personal opinion).

O and stop off at Sodwana instead of St. Lucia. Take a day trip to Cape Vidal in St. Lucia maybe, but that place isn't what it used to be.

I will second his advice.

Slightly further south there is the tree houses at Bonamazi(?) reserve which are cool. A bit further south you can get the floating wood chalets at Goedetrou dam just outside Eshowe, ask if they have double bed units because shagging on two singles pushed together is not on :D

yeah i've also heard that st lucia is a hole nowadays :(

here's some recommendations from my side:

1. kosi/sodwana. scuba and snorkel territory. you may need to take malaria meds. if you're into catching and cooking crayfish, fish and mussels yourself, the kzn coast is your oyster.
2. you can take a drive through hluhluwe game reserve and see the rhinos etc on the way down.
3. zinkwazi/shaka's rock are nice if you can get accommodation, with a hotel and campsite in the vicinity.
4. lots of golf up north coast - princes grant, zimbali, simbithi, mount edgecombe...
5. gateway mall in umhlanga has nice movie theatres, restaurants, wave thingy
6. dbn has some nice night spots and restaurants in florida road. you can check out the stadium and take a ride to the top if you like. and go visit ushaka if you have some cash.
7. not really a big fan of toti, or scottburgh beach-wise tbh.
8. nice campsite called happy wanderers on the beach at kelso (maybe pm davemc about the south coast - looks like he lives in munster)
9. golf @ selborne... treat yourself to a stay at lynton hall http://www.amatikulu.com/lynton.htm
10. great swimming beach and nice hotel at pumula/umzumbe
11. head inland at port shepstone and go to oribi gorge, for local grown coffee, bridge swinging and white water rafting.
11. nice surfing at st. michaels-on-sea.
12. pancakes (with practically any filling) and paddling at uvongo.
13. some dodgy nightclubs in margate if you're into that.
14. nice quiet beaches and nice swimming at southbroom, trafalgar.
15. more golf at san lameer, and southboom. also plenty of nut farms (if you want to stock up), and more coffee farms.
15. avoid the wild coast casino.

enjoy. and remember, lock, bold and tie everything down that could get stolen. the kzn coast has a bit of a reputation.

The best scuba diving in the world (according to some) is in the Aliwal Shoal off the Coast of Umkomaas(10km north of Scotburgh), theres also crocworld nearby, Rocky bay is decent beach. On the way back check out Ukhahlamba Drakensberg Park it's a world heritage site
