I googled this in the morning and found quite a few threads/articles/questions about why drinking coffee causes stomach ache. Obviously it doesn't happen to everyone but personally, every single time I drink coffee my stomach starts to pain.

Now, question is, how exactly should I make the coffee so that my stomach doesn't hurt after drinking it? I'm restricted to drinking tea because of this.

Does this happen to any of you?

Any more info you guys would like to share is welcome..

I experience the exact same thing ... if I drink coffee on an empty stomach. And my stomach blows up like a balloon, pffffffffft.

Have you tried decaffeinated?
Pretty much any coffee I have has this effect. From the little I've read on it, it has to do with the acidity inside the coffee that upsets the stomach but then what I don't get is that some people have like 5+ cups a day and don't feel anything.

Why?

probably the same reason I can have 5 cups of fresh juice and not feel anything while my brother has 1 and is affected or why I can only have very small amounts of pork while everyone else pigs it down.

I'm the same as Picard and Feo, but I drink lots of coffee.

In the morning when I have my first cup of coffee, I normally have to do number 2 as well, just after or in between the cup.

Feo, I've found that this mainly happens if I drink Ricoffy, which is in actual fact filled with chicory (spelling?). This is an additive which gets put into instant coffee to enhance the flavour and it's basically just a replacement for normal coffee beans. Nestle add chicory to Ricoffy, so they need to use less beans.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chicory

This is a small unknown fact, but I'd rather drink Moer Koffie (filter coffee) than Ricoffy. I usually buy two decent brands of Filter coffee and mix it together to create one kicker. I mixed red Ciro and Trekker this weekend and it's flipping awesomeness :p

Try filter coffee or coffee without Chicory and see if it's the same.

What reason is that?

And am I right in saying that you shouldn't drink coffee on an empty stomach? Again, people in my office run up and down to the kitchen throughout the day and drink inordinate amounts of coffee without eating very much. It's puzzling why they don't complain of stomach pain..

This happens to me too.

It's makes my stomach sore and it almost feels like a laxative that after a cup of coffee, I'm forced to take a dump.

Check out the whole "eat right for your type" thing. I've heard many people swear by it and it would be interesting to see if coffee is a no no for you according to this. http://www.dadamo.com/

EDIT: Oh yes, apparently this is a guide.

I don't have a reason for it, it's just how it is ..... different people and all that. I sometimes have 2 cups of coffee before eating anything in the morning and I don't have stomach pain and I don't have to rush to the toilet either.

Bottom line is coffee is bad for you! When you go to a doctor and he asks whether you smoke, drink alcohol or drink lots of coffee you know it is not good ;)

Just to bug those who despise Wiki, I googled and came across this interesting entry on wiki that lists the benefits and risks of coffee use:

* 2.3 Reduced risk of Parkinson's disease
* 2.4 Cognitive performance
* 2.5 Analgesic enhancement
* 2.6 Antidiabetic
* 2.7 Liver disease
* 2.8 Cancer
* 2.9 Cardioprotective
* 2.10 Laxative/diuretic
* 2.11 Antioxidant
* 2.12 Prevention of dental caries
* 2.13 Gout

Risks

* 3.1 Cancer
* 3.2 Gastrointestinal problems

Interesting to see 2.10 listed after the comments above.....

Personally I do not touch the stuff and never have. In hindsight I am happy about this as being a white male, with some hereditary risk, point 3.5, 3.6 and 3.9 concern me!

Excerpts from the wiki article you refer to...

2.10 Laxative/diuretic
"Contrary to popular belief, caffeine does not act as a diuretic when consumed in moderation, and does not lead to dehydration or to a water-electrolyte imbalance; current evidence suggests that caffeinated beverages contribute to the body's daily fluid requirements no differently than pure water does."

3.6 Blood pressure
Caffeine has previously been implicated in increasing the risk of high blood pressure; however, recent studies have not confirmed any association.

3.9 Coronary artery disease
A Harvard study conducted over the course of 20 years of 128,000 people published in 2006 concluded that there was no evidence to support the claim that coffee consumption itself increases the risk of coronary heart disease.

I think other websites differ, but that's the one you mention. I've also found studies that say that instant coffee doesn't contain cafestol and doesn't contribute to higher cholesterol at all.

But these theories/studies change every 5 years. ;)

Yes, and if you read further you will see the same article admit as much

A 2004 study tried to discover why the beneficial and detrimental effects of coffee conflict. The study concluded that consumption of coffee is associated with significant elevations in biochemical markers of inflammation.

Caffeine is a stimulant. Along with Nicotine, Amphetamines, MDMA and Cocaine etc. I would not take any of the latter multiple times on a daily basis so I sure am not keen to do the same with the former, whether the long term effects thereof have been confirmed or not.... ;)

Yeah, that study involved 3042 people. The one I quoted involved 128 000 people.

But I don't drink much coffee either, due to the side effects I heard about while growing up. ;)

When I drink coffee (Ricoffy may I add, best stuff in the world) on an empty stomach I get really naucious. Must eat something first.

I love my coffee. I usually don't eat breakfast before class, since I prefer to use that time to sleep, rather than make breakfast. So I just drink a cup of coffee first thing in the morning and that keeps me going till about 11. After that I start to get really really hungry.

Probably the fact that my mom always woke us up for school with a cup of coffee. And my mom does drink a lot of coffee (which caused me to also drink a lot of coffee) so I guess I sorta got immune to its affects or something. Doesn't really keep me awake either

Are you lactose intolerant?

Maybe the milk in your coffee does not agree with your tummy?
Try it black.
