Does anyone know where i can purchase a kindle/ebook reader localy pref not online as I would like to first use it and if it is possible to read PDF's on the kindle/ebook
You probably can't unless you buy it second hand. SA is just very backward for electronic gadgets.
The Kindle doesn't 'kindle' me at all. 
Let's wait for a proper device. Although not quite comparable (or maybe wrt certain aspects), you can buy a netbook for $489 that's infinitely more useful and powerful. But we all knew that already, right?

The Kindle doesn't 'kindle' me at all.
How much does a Kindle actually cost?
Because $489 would probably easily cover the cost of the books that I've read in my entire lifetime...
I mean really... You can get a 2nd-hand paperback for the price of a box of cigarettes. And there is still such a thing as a library too. Also, if you have a friend who reads, they won't object to lending you their old paperbacks.
Then again... For the new digital oligarchy, lending information to a friend is tantamount to Crimes Against The Free Market, deserving of no less than five-years' hard labour in a Microsoft gulag.

That's exactly what I meant by saying 'not quite comparable.' I like gadgets and all, but I have to say I have never read a book (i.e. a book I didn't need to read
) that wasn't on paper. I'll buy the Samsung e-reader - wiki says it's called 'papyrus.' Now wouldn't that be just awesome. A scroll that one can roll up that's made from a plant - that's actually an e-reader gadget thingy. Green technology to boot! (I can dream

Kindle is great if you're studying stuff and downloading stuff from the web such as HTML and PDFs. Also there is a huge collection of FREE public domain works at Project Gutenberg and there are many other free E-Book sites, not to mention that torrentz contain a lot more.
In the long run you'll save on paper and ink if you want to download and read ebooks (or any HTML text or raw text) from the web.
The Kindle2 does suck that the resolution in my mind isn't so good meaning pages with lots of text and HTML formatting may not show up so well - the Kindle 3 may solve that problem with a

Unless the netbook has an AMOLED display you'll only be able to read indoors, also a netbook is quite heavy - unless you consider a tablet like those made by Kohjinsha and NEC in Japan.
