Comair licence suspended over maintenance concerns

Can someone with genuine aviation credentials shed some light? The secrecy from both CAA and Comair makes zero sense, just tell us if there is actual mis management, lack of maintenance or what? I'm definitely canceling my booked trip in early April with them, don't care about penalties or if they will fly again.

I'd rather go for this more sinister angle!
Possible but engines did fail on multiple flights, landing gear also, there is nothing sinister about that, whatever they did, with whoever they did it with, the maintenance didn't work.

And their communication has gone completely dead. They’ve not even acknowledged the indefinite suspension. I’ve had no email, no sms, not a peep. Incredible.
I'm sure it's on its way.

While they have had a few incidents lately, you can’t help but think there is more to this. Especially when the CAA did jack squat after the SAA alpha-floor event and their own Citation crash with insufficiently trained crew!

It’s good if they acted on genuine safety issues. It’s not good if this comes after some cadres golf game and some large black money bags…

I think the aviation authorities (or bodies) acted independently on this one. I also think if Comair had nothing to hide, we would have gotten a clear answer (without exposing too many technical details) around this situation - so far, it seems they calling the suspension unwarranted.

On a light note, isn't SAA broke, therefore there is no more money to take . If 'cadres' wanted the money bags, wouldn't it make sense to strike a deal with Comair, which includes covering up this case?

This sounds like Comair is in trouble.

Sounds like a series of events and now a domino effect.

They lost a lot of money during covid lockdowns.

They used SAA technical for maintenance and we all know how dodgy SAA is.

SAA owes them money. As mentioned above.

They entered business rescue during hard lockdown.

FlySafair is going to take advantage of this.

Their flights between Durban>Cape Town have been very pricey recently.

Safair was the only airline to fly that route for a while.

CemAir seems to be flying between Jhb>Cpt & Dbn>Cpt after Mango disappeared.

Lift Airlines better wake the **** up. They are only existing by flying between Jhb>Cpt.

Lift Airlines has been a great disappointment. It's almost like they don't care about expanding and competing.

It is weird but Safair in essence has become a monopoly. Why would they compete on routes with fewer airlines?

Have a flight to CPT this Tuesday I geuss it is safe to assume I need to rebook with another airline at that kulula won't refund me

Despite working through the night, Comair will not be able to resume operations today.
The SACAA still needs to review documentation provided overnight. We continue to engage constructively with the SACAA.

Our priority now is to assist passengers who have been stranded. We have chartered two aircraft to assist vulnerable passengers and those who most urgently need to travel.

We deeply regret the inconvenience to our passengers and are committed to re accommodating you to the best of our ability. We urge affected passengers not to travel to the airport unless they have been able to make alternative arrangements.

For customers on British Airways (operated by Comair) flights, British Airways’ booking with confidence policy will apply. Details can be found here: www.britishairways.com/travel/book-with-confidence/public/en_gb Customers may also contact the Contact Centre on [email protected].

kulula.com customers can rebook with no change penalties, subject to availability of the same fare class. Customers wishing to rebook should e-mail [email protected].

Comair will update social media channels with the most up-to-date information and customers will be kept informed via SMS.

I'm sure it's on its way.

I finally received an sms after I had booked another airline and was sitting the waiting area of the departure lounge. They totally screwed the pooch on this. The cost was astronomical but a good thing I did it because they have done absolutely nothing to help.

They should have been left to die.

They have only charted 2 aircraft?

It is a Sunday. Most people work on Monday. How do they decide who is "the most vulnerable" or need to travel urgently.

Will the others get free accommodation wherever they are stranded?

They should have waived the "same fare class" conditioned on rebooking.

Shocking

If the CAA is concerned, then you know...

This whole thing is a stuff up. A costly one.

What solution did they offer via the sms?

Did they offer to pay for accommodation and a seat on the chartered plane?

Now we all get to see what real surge pricing looks like.

Zero. You are on your own. They will let you book within 6 months for the same route in the same fare class. No refund. No compensation of any kind.

Yeah price gouging is ridiculous.. I have a US visa appointment Tuesday I can't miss so bought lift tickets but still not sure how I will get back

Ah yes, when someone loses, someone else wins. I saw people tweet about Flysafair's crazy pricing, following the Kulula/BA suspension.

The next few days will be really good business for Flysafair; they now the only airline operating some routes.
