Comcast bans man from Internet for using too much data

lol... welcome back to 1995. This is going to come back and bite them.

See, SA is actually ahead of the times.

Capped connections? We been having it.

Although $60 (R420) for a 15Mbps connection is just a tad cheaper than ours.

lol, Wonder how he would like SA's broadband policies..

Weird how suddenly SA is creeping forwards & the US is creeping backward on the broadband side.

The whole US thing is weird anyway. Here in SA the capacity is just not there (atm), in the US it is (unlit fiber etc) but still the ISPs are pushing everyone down.

It's like he said, Comcast are losing money due to the web (netflix etc).

Unfair comparison, we've barely even reached the out-of-nappies crawling stage while the US has been running full marathons for years.

This is about profit, nothing else. ISP's have figured out they can make more money by metering out internet access instead of leaving their pipes open for consumption.

edit: More interesting however is this part ...

But data usage is not very expensive for a large ISP. It's somewhere around 2 cents per GB of traffic sent to or received from the greater internet, and the prices keep dropping.

However, the simple total bandwidth model is the one that's become popular. AT&T recently slapped a 150 GB per month cap on its DSL service, while Time Warner Cable trialed services with extremely low caps, only to retreat after intense protest by customers and politicians.

Any takers :D

From reading the article, correct me if i am wrong but he uploaded 250GB of data due to his lossless music etc :p

250GB upload :p Andre is so cool :)

Edit: Andre updated his blog with some interesting views from some questions.

Like this one clears my question above ...well somewhat

You're a Bittorrenting bastard who refuses to pay for content. Admit it!

Not really. I happily pay for content when it’s available, including a three disc Netflix/streaming subscription, a two disc Gamefly subscription, DirecTV, Pandora One (higher quality audio streams), downloadable game purchases from Steam, Xbox LIVE, and PlayStation Network, iDevice apps for my iPhone and iPad, as well as one-off streaming movie rentals from Xbox LIVE and PSN. However, in the spirit of full disclosure, I’m a Doctor Who fan and due to BBC America’s inability to release current episodes in a timely manner in the US (to either DirecTV or Netflix), I did grab the first two episodes of the current season from bittorrent earlier this month. However, that accounts for about about 1 gigabyte of data total – doesn’t explain the other missing 249 gigabytes. This is why it’s frustrating that Comcast either can’t or won’t share with me what applications were using the data they claim was used. I can’t trace the source back, and hence have to assume the issue is the uploading I was doing to the cloud.

Their T&C:
Are there restrictions on data consumption that apply to the Service?

The Service is for personal and non-commercial residential use only. Therefore, Comcast reserves the right to suspend or terminate Service accounts where data consumption is not characteristic of a typical residential user of the Service as determined by the company in its sole discretion. Comcast has established a monthly data consumption threshold per Comcast High-Speed Internet account of 250 Gigabytes (“GB”). Use of the Service in excess of 250GB per month is excessive use and is a violation of the Policy.

Welcome to the U(ncapped)S(outh)A(frica) :P

I am confused a little bit by this article. Was he on a 250gb account or was it sold as uncapped? If it was uncapped, at least Comcast lets you know what they consider to be a reasonable amount of data per month, unlike our ISPs who refuse to put a fine line on things.

This is the problem with Comcast they want to protect their cable television business, so that streaming/downloading is not a viable option.

I'm sure that MWeb will also do something similar in the future as their uncapped product must be starting to impact on the profitability of DSTV.

Totally different system in America, in short Mweb would provide Television service and internet in one package, here in South Africa you just change your isp

You have to be fair - his connection was unshaped. For a 250GB unshaped on this side it would cost quite a bit more.

They did not even call him? Odd. At least in the good old SA they usually try to communicate with you first... afaik.
