Oct 8 (TruthDive): Supposed to be the “comet of the century” and predicted to be one of the brightest comets of the century, Comet ISON may wind up disappointing sky watchers as new data suggests it could be disintegrating.
Comet ISON made its closest approach to Mars this week and scientists in charge of the sharp-eyed camera aboard NASA’s Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter say the long-awaited comet did not live up to expectations.
Astronomer Ignacio Ferrin from FACom, Universidad de Antioquia, evaluated the latest observational data of Comet ISON and has found the clear signs of what he has called an “imminent demise” of the comet.
Ferrin is using “secular light curves” to feature the brightness history of a comet. On comparing the light curves of ISON with eight other comets that disintegrated, Ferrin believes ISON will soon “dissolve” out. He said in a statement, “The light curve of the comet showed a slowdown event characterized by a constant brightness with no sign of a brightness increase tendency.”
Ferrin said the slowdown of ISON began on Jan. 13, 2013, and sustained through the last observations made in September. For nine months or more than 270 days, the brightness of ISON has remained constant, a behaviour without any example in cometary Astronomy and that is a troubling sign for the survival of the comet, he said.
The HiRISE camera on NASA’s Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter recorded a series of images of Comet ISON. The HiRISE camera took some time off its usual targets of imaging the craters, dunes and rust-coloured landforms of Mars, instead pointed toward space as ISON passed 8 million miles away from the red planet.
HiRISE scientists Alan Delamere and Alfred McEwen wrote on the instrument’s website, based on preliminary analysis of the data that the comet appears to be at the low end of the range of brightness predictions for the observation. As a result, the image is not visually pleasing but low coma activity is best for constraining the size of the nucleus.
The best viewing of the Comet from the Earth will be in late November and early December. ISON will reach its closest point to Earth on Dec. 26 at a range of 40 million miles, six times farther than its flyby of Mars this week, according to the European Space Agency.
