Hello

Live in the wonderful community of Kalk Bay. Out street would like to get wireless for internet use and we would all like to share the monthly cost. We all have d-link's already and would like to find out the best way of getting stared.

Any suggestions

Kim, welcome to the forum!

Are you referring to wireless internet? Or just being able to link all your neighbours in the street wirelessly? I belong to a WUG (Wireless User Group) in JHB, but there is also a very active WUG in CapeTown - and we can advise on the "linking of the neighbours" idea, but if its internet you require, I suggest you try a WISP (Wireless Internet Service Provider) - Not sure which WISPS, if any, are active in Kalk Bay, but I am sure someone will suggest one!

Give us some more detail as to exactly what you are looking for!

Hi Kim, I recommend removing your telephone number
Hi Kim and welcome!
Definitely remove your number - for two reasons:
a) There's always some tosser out there that will abuse it.
b) Telkom frowns upon the use of wireless networks to share DSL lines. They also have a legal angle that they could use to attempt to shut you down. Seriously.

I definitely recommend that you keep your personal details off any public internet forum, make use of the Private Messenging (PM) feature to exchange such details.

Right onto your question!

Before anyone can help you, we need information. Please try the best you can to post answers to the following questions:

1.) How many prospective connections for this network?
2.) How far away is everyone from each other?
3.) What exact make and model(s) of Dlink wireless equipment does everyone have?
4.) What are the ADSL line details (or is this not installed yet?)
5.) What are the characteristics of the wireless members? Is everyone "mom and dad" types, or are there some teenagers amongst the prospective users? What is everyone wanting to use the connection for?

I personally shared a DSL connection with my father in law over a distance of around 250 metres. When it worked it was great and heaps cheaper to share the costs, so I'll be happy to help however I can.
