I've often wondered . . . is there any advantage to using an external card reader instead of attaching the camera directly to my laptop?

Well with a card reader you open up the option to use memory cards of different types from different devices and now that you get these 1000 in 1 readers for dirt cheap no reason not to get one, and also think theres a bit of a speed benefit like Syndyre said.

Depends on the camera model. Some are faster than other when connected directly to the pc. Still its so cheap to buy a card reader, buy one and try.

Well the camera doesn't seem slow - even with those 10mb raw files coming off it - but you're right, seeing as the readers are pretty cheap why not. :)

It does mean I can copy off one card and shoot with another if the need arises.

Thanks

You guys have so much money it's not even funny. I wonder if I'd be able to start a thread like this one day? :p LOL!

I consulted the Magic 8 Ball on your behalf - the answer was a solid "Yes" :)

BTW - the card reader I saw was about r150 - hope you can start a more impressive thread than this :D

Thanks for the edit, I was just about to say that you always know how to "shatter" my heart ;)

Maybe dude, I'll start a thread and say I'm buying telscum or something :p ;) :D

It doesn't use up your camera's batteries?

I'm not sure what the useage is like for transferring files, or does the USB handle that? I heard abot it from someone, not really sure..

EDIT: To answer my own question: "It uses power from your computer so you save camera batteries." From some article about card readers.
