hi guys

okay just a general question...

I built a system for my department to use and now I understand another department wants to takeover my system...

so all I want to know is whether I should be compensated as I am developing this system using MVC...

also if I do get compensated for that, what should I charge them?

help!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :)

Did you develop it in company time? I'm assuming you are a developer - if so you'll need to check your employment contract.

Maybe I'm missing something before my morning coffee but what does using MVC have to do with whether or not you should be compensated?

well I did develop it during company time and I know that developing systems is out of my job description as I mainly focus on SQL report development.

lol not sure what to do now honestly, think the best bet is to speak to the HR Department.

Yeah do that. Most likely, because you used company time and resources they effectively "paid" you to develop this already.

Im very confused. Are you permanently employed at your company? Is the other department part of your company?

Whatever you write for the company is the companies, not yours.

If you developed it during company time for the companies use, then forget about it lol

Best case - convince them you wrote it in your own time over weekends :p

this is the Municipality that we are talking about.....

also the department that requested for my system is part of the municipality

What are you going on about. It is not your system, it is your companies. You just built it. You have zero claim on it.
The fact that you think due to it using a design pattern such as MVC has any relevance is a pretty damning statement to your abilities as well.
Yeah, go to HR. That will work out well for you.

What does that have to do with anything????

Usually what happens is the one department "purchases" it from the other department.... its comes out their budget.

Did you get paid while you wrote this ?
Was this part of your job ?

If you answered yes then chances are you wont get a cent extra for this.

Developed on company time using company resources = the company owns the IP to the system. Plus I'm sure if you checked your employment contract somewhere in there will be a clause along the lines of "Any innovations or inventions that you come up while permanently employed by company X are the property of the employer". Pretty standard clause in just about any employment contract I've seen.

The aggression in this thread - somebody took their pre-workout and didn't go to gym

Yup, I think this is a young dude, prob at his first job or something.

^this

MVC might be a breakthrough for you, but most senior developers would be worried about any development not using this pattern.

Not really, it's a silly question this oke asks... If one of my developers came to me with a story like that I'd can myself...

It is even worse than that, he doesn't seem to understand the Employer - Employee relationship if he thinks he is entitled to compensation for their property
