Complete Noob (idiot) needs advice on getting Cable Internet

Thanks, good to know.
Pop into the CrystalWeb thread and ask any questions you want. You'll generally get answers directly from DJ... who is the CEO, CWs accounts have been specifically designed with streaming in mind

Thanks. Will will do that.

Why not go for Afrihost 20mbps uncapped? R969/month. I would go for that if I were you.

What is the difference between Home Uncapped (Semi Throttled) and Premium Uncapped (Semi Shaped)?

I've looked at a hell of a lot of ISP's websites and a good medium between speed vs cost looks to be about 8mbps. Please Help!!!

I'm with Vox at home, but they no longer offer the package I'm on. However, once you get your ADSL line sorted out, you might want to consider Vox's Fatpipe options :

https://www.voxtelecom.co.za/fat-pipe-lite

https://www.voxtelecom.co.za/fatpipe

They have someone active on this forum for Fatpipe so if you have any problems, you can easily post :

I don't know where you're based, but these days, Vox tends to have more issues in the Southern Region (Western / Eastern Cape), compared to JHB / PTA from what I've read in the last 6 months. Things are generally good to excellent concerning full-line speeds, from my own experience.

I contributed to the following recent thread which you should find helpful, especially for other contributions made :

In it, there's a link to another related thread.

First put your house number into http://www2.telkom.co.za/checkadsl/check.htm there and see what line speed you can get.

Dsl line cost for 2 meg = R150, 4 meg R300, 10 meg R400 more or less

Now add your data you need 100 gig cap which includes uncapped from 12pm-6am for your big files. Capped products at cheaper prices are much better then uncapped on the quality side.
Axxess = R189
Afrihost = R199
Vox = R249
Crystal web = R279

I would only go to these companies at the moment.

Thanks to everybody for the input. It is very much appreciated.

Scary_Turtle - that looks like a very good starting point.

Well Telkom is utterly useless. After speaking to 3 consultants I was quoted 3 different speeds available in my area.
2, 4 and 10Mbps.

After speaking to a manager, it would seem that only 2Mbps is available. Eventhough ADSL checker says 10Mbps is available here, and I have friends staying 2 blocks from here with 4Mbps lines.

So 2Mbps is obviously too slow, no LTE Coverage under telkom and not a futurehood area.

So what the hell do I do now?

Well you can get the 2 meg line and then post your stats to see if you can get a 4 meg or http://www.wapa.org.za/coverage/request/
where you get ok internet at inflated prices.

Unless you are lucky enough to have fibre coming to your neighbourhood (telkom or otherwise), or be in the reception area of a local WISP, your only option remains cellular. As you know, large bundles on Vodacom and MTN get expensive quickly. Go browse the options for TM and Cell C. Look at monthly contracts but also upfront payment bundles. You can get decent speeds between 5 and 20mbps on HSPA+ and if you're lucky you may even get LTE reception. Also look at Afrihost and Axcess (they are classical ADSL ISP's but also offer mobile sims that uses MTN's network).

Some things to note:
- TM's website is useless... there are multiple data deals (look under shop>personal and shop>home). And remember to toggle between contract and prepaid. Worst is sometimes the option you want does list a price, only "Ask us".
- TM's personal data deals are available nationwide and can roam on MTN. These deals are typically a little more expensive and doesn't offer any free night data
- TM's LTE home deals do fall-back to 3G - I think (but only to the TM 3G network, not to MTN)
- TM's LTE unlimited/futurehood deals may be strict in terms of your home address (due to the first 50 per base station special), but in reality should fall back to TM 3G when out of range (again not to MTN).
- The once-off 50 or 100GB deals which are valid for a year may well offer some of the cheapest cellular per GB rates. If you use ~20GB pm, a 100GB bundle would last you 5 months. Thats R3200 at TM (with roaming on MTN I think) and R2500 (or R1400 if still on special) at Cell C. Pain with cell C though is you must buy and RICA a new sim every time. The TM sim can be loaded with prepaid airtime and bundle loaded via USSD menu (I think).
