Currently using mobile internet to write this message. Most sites like Facebook etc are snappier for some reason and load quicker than on my 4mbps adsl line which was refreshing. It is a latency issue and this reflects badly on Telkom and brilliantly on Virgin and whatever they did to improve the situation. Perhaps it is a localized thing in my area but I have used this yesterday in Bryanston and again in the Boardwalk area in PTA East and now in Equestria and it works like a charm.

The calls on Virgin are clear. Perhaps it is because of a limited userbase? I don't know but it is comfortable to use them at the moment.

If the experience can stay like this I will buy out my Vodacom contract ASAP and stay on Virgin. :)

Nice work Virgin!

If Virgin do come right one day then I will switch again. I used to be with them and there were way too many problems.

Come Virgin, lower your no bundle Internet rates, setup 3G network and fix your systems please!!!!!!

Thank you for the post, we do appriciate positive feedback.

I simply do not believe it.

I've been avoiding Virgin for months because of their extreme slowness, unreliability and up-down network, not to mention their DNS problems (Server not found).

Last night MTN was down completely so I decided to look in again. All I can say is NO CHANGE. It's still extremely slow and choppy. It look several tries to open the pages I usually visit. When I tred to download a 756K file it sat on 1% for about 15 minutes - showing a download speed of 0.5 Kb/s. At one point it climbed to 1.5Kb/s.

I'm not sure if Antowan is utilising Vodacom's network or there is a HUGE discrepancy in quality between provinces or even local cells, but he does not describe the same network that I tried last night.

{and just to reiterate - Yes I had Cell-C do a test on my local cell and they reported it was "working as it should" - ie. slooooow is normal}

..
Oh and before I forget, MTN is back up again and is absolutely sprinting on GPRS as usual.:-)

Last night same happened to me. Tried to browse the forum and do some banking. It took about 10 minutes for me to get to the point where I can see the balance in my account. Forum pages also loaded very slowly.

I switched to vc 3g/hsdpa from being with vm since they started and its like comparing a rolls royce to a jhb taxi bus. lol Its the best move i ever made. From 50c a meg to 19c meg with speed and service that vm can only dream of.

Agreed! Was with them in the beginning too - but alas, now I am stuck with Telscum and no-Vuca-Com.

I get a solid 8KB/s all day round, except for the occasional day when it is just dead. (About once a month). So I'm fairly happy. However I don't think it can beat ADSL price-wise or latency-wise.

The people in remote areas are not happy with VM, so I think you're right about the localization. The big cities seem to get more solid connections.

Ping has improved. It used to be 1500ms to google, now it's 600ms. Still twice what I get on VC, but a massive improvement nonetheless.

Neither do I. I had to go to make sure it was Virgin Mobile South Africa he was talking about; he mentions Bryanston and PTA East so it must be.

Cape Town qualifies as a remote area and therefore get rubbish connections :)

No seriously in PTA east, VM has been decent for the last year or so. The claim that it loads better than on a 4meg adsl sounds very dodgy though.

vdata sucks

i've tried em all

apart from vodacom and mtn, virgin sucks. have you ever hit mtn's 'bottomless' cup?

if virgin works - its maybe 2 out of 24 hours and its as slow as

virgin, tried your gprs service and no thanks you can keep it

a disappointed customer - still paying R259/month for an imate :( but with ZERO airtime usage. got 5 months to go.

:(:(:(

I'm drinking so much of it, I am liable to choke.:D I just hope they keep pouring it, because for just a small airtime voucher I can surf some of the day (as long as I don't use all the credit) then literally all night and into the early morning. Then next day I usually have to start again. Sometimes I don't even have to buy another for a week (rare).
Aaaaaah! Thanks MTN.

...not to mention their DNS problems...

Yes, I have experienced the same thing. I do think their bandwidth and latency is not too bad for a GSM network, but they really have to sort out their radius and DNS servers. I am getting frustrated.

I have not tested the GPRS network in the last week!
