I'm 35 and pretty much have not studied.

For the past 8 years I've been in distribution and am Product Manager, which is alright. However I'm looking for another position and it seems there's very little available for me. I'm thinking then maybe I should study something to help in future (I still have 20 years or so work ....)

These Comptia A+N+ - are they tough?
Valued in the industry?

They arnt tough, but you have to renew your certificate every 3 years.

really?
i did my a+ in 2002 and never renewed it.

If you serious, you need to choose what you want to do. A+ is more desktop techy stuff. Assebling PC's trouble shooting and software support.

N+ Is more networking related.

Maybe do both and see which tickles your fancy. If you serious about networking I would suggest you do the Cisco certification: CCNA and up. This is hard though, but the rewards are endless.

Aren't these the foundations for CCNA though?

Nea, you can do CCNA without any A+ or N+ certification. If you can assemble a PC, load software on it from first boot and the likes you'll waste your time on A+. If you can do sub netting, know the difference between crossover and straight cabling you're already above N+ level :D

If you have no idea, better do one of those if not both first.

Thanks.

Last thing - does anyone offer them online?

For over ten years, CompTIA marketed its flagship A+, Network+ and Security+ certifications as being valid for a lifetime. In January 2011, however, CompTIA changed the status of these certifications so that they would expire every three years. Under this proposal, certified individuals would have to re-cert for the exams or pay a yearly maintenance fee for a CEU (Continuing Education Units) system.[34] Some certified members felt that this action breached the conditions of the original contract with CompTIA, and that the change effectively showed CompTIA reneging on a deal.[35] Less than a month after making this announcement, CompTIA reversed its decision. Under the new policy, only certificates received after January 1, 2011, will need to be renewed every three years; however, a certain amount of documented hours geared towards use of the certification will automatically renew the certification

Why not look at MS certs and go the SQL BI route?

I thought these were the foundations and one branches out at a later stage. So was focused on doing something that I could do with no backing.

If you got an IT background A+ and N+ is boring, go for something which is interesting.

MCSE or MCSA (One is programming and the other is databasing)
