Compulsory items on new car

Got a triangle and a full sized spare (205) with my new Rio - no marie-biscuit wheel.

Most new cars won't have a proper spare wheel. Other countries don't have as many problems as we have with crime and potholes, so they figure it's optional. As for the triangle, you are required to have one by law. But I doubt that they are required to give you one free of charge.

if
yeah BMW comes with run flats

but imagine in the middle of nowhere ...and you are more than 80km from the next town

what happens

then you need to call AA or BMW on call services and time gets wasted

where as a spare takes few minutes and you good to go
if i remember correctly you can drive 250km at 80km/h on a punctured runflat from BMW. you're going to be hard pressed to be 250km away from a town even in south africa, that town may not; however, have a spare tyre

They did offer to give a warning triangle free of charge. Still need to pick it up.

Not sure if the tires are runflat though. Somehow a spare just gives me more peace of mind. Will look at maybe just keeping a spare tied down in the boot.

I don't think my audi or my 370z have a warning triangle :/

I would not, will not even dream of driving a vehicle without a spare wheel in SA. Run flats or not, one big rock/pothole and your whole wheel is toast.

I can't see runflats being an option in SA.
1. You can easily be 100km away from the nearest tyre replacement place in SA
2.Tyre's here are expensive, runflats even more expensive, I've heard if you drive on a runflat thats flat you have to throw it away afterwards.
3.Runflats are crap for comfort.

Tires expensive here?

Just had a quick look around, the same tires I have on my car that costs R4800 for 4 fully fitted with alignment and balancing here costs £120-130 in the UK per tire, that's about R7200 for 4

Tyre thing sucks. I've tried the repair thing once. Zero confidence in those. Also, you can trash the tyre afterwards (depending on kit).

For the triangle I'd explain to them very nicely how I feel about being sold a car that isn't road legal. Make enough noise along those lines and you'll have your triangle pretty fast. Mention "not road worth" within earshot of other customers and they shall procure one for you very fast.

Actually I bought my own triangle last week (old car). Purely from a practical PoV you really need one when the business hit the fan.
