On 19 January, schools opened for the 2022 academic year in the Eastern Cape. At this time, the Eastern Cape department of education had not delivered stationery and textbooks, paid teaching and general assistants for November and December 2021, paid scholar transport providers, and failed to fill many vacant teaching posts.

Many learners were without teachers, textbooks, stationery and transport. In Makhanda, some schools were shut down by parents to force the department to pay the assistants. By March 2022, it became clear that the department had also failed to pay catering staff at hostels in the province, leaving these learners without food.

This bumbling start follows two years of disruptions caused by the Covid-19 pandemic, in which learners lost an estimated 1.3 years of schooling.

All this legislation does is put parents who do care about their kid's education (parents who choose to homeschool), at the mercy of education department officials. Instead of solving the problems with their own garbage education system, they pick on a soft target.

Yes, agreed. Not on the mother tongue thing though... that would you make mandatory ? It should be more accessible in mother tongue but its almost impossible to accommodate every learner in their home language.

These are just more 'laws'. The only thing the ANC can do. Just ignore the laws. When they start to act, all these laws will be thrown over in courts. As easy as that.

Unfortunately for the ANC though, they can expect to lose a few more taxpayers who will rather leave the country and take their children to another country for better education.

There are lots of parents putting their children through the Cambridge system because it's a much better curriculum than the CAPS based crap our education department pump out. It's also recognised internationally unlike our current matric certificate which isn't worth the paper its written on.

Many parents can't afford to pay for private Cambridge schooling so they use online options for learning and tutoring and this is something the government would love to put a stop to because:
1. They can't indoctrinate those kids with apartheid propaganda and one sided, rewritten history lessons.
2. They can't force sex education and perverted crap on 9 year olds.
3. The children get a superior education which doesn't fit the mindset of bringing everyone down to the lowest common denominator. If you're more educated then you have an unfair advantage in life compared to the millions of 30 percenters.

Parents are responsible for the education and well being of their children - not the state. Sure there will be parents who don't do a great job but most parents will do their best for the children.
Who in their right mind wants to trust the ANC (state) to educate and indoctrinate their children? You want to allow people who blatantly promote racism, corruption, theft, murder, etc. to raise your children?
I'd rather be arrested than give up that responsibility.

Sure - I have considered this point myself. Its a generalized problem with education and its valid. The problem though is that sooner or later these kids have to interact with the real world and haven't had this isolated education.


All homeschooler parents should have to read this book and do a full report before being allowed to school at home.

That is not what I said. I'd rather teach my own kids what they need to know when the time is appropriate instead of stealing their childhood and innocence away from them. My 9 year old daughter already knows about the birds and bees. She doesn't need to know how to have sex or pleasure herself.

The problem is - Outlandish cults are the ones that are homeschooling, so that is why you need the regulations. I'm sure that your kids are fine but what about everyone else's kids.

The problem with schools(education) in South African context, is mostly a waste of resources. Children cannot read properly or write for that matter. And at the end of 12 years are essentially useless to the Job Market without serious further education/skills investments.

I really dont think home schooling can be worse than the majority of public schools dotted around the townships. In fact with a decent internet connection, the parents can ensure that kids have access to world class resources.

I will probably be taking out my daughter out of her public school and re-enroll her in private. As there is a big difference.
