Hi all,

Been long since I've posted. I have an issue that internet searches and Chat GPTs haven't solved. I hope someone here might have had the same issue.

Here's the issue: when I switch off my PC (power button or start menu), it sounds like it wants to switch off, but then switches itself right back on and effectively restarts itself. Currently the only way to keep it off is to switch it off, and then when it posts again I force shut it off by keeping the power button pressed in.

What I've tried

Update BIOS
Update Windows
Update all drivers
Checked power settings

Thanks to anyone willing to help.

So many possabilities, Can you try shutting down by holding in shift while clicking shutdown from the start menu

Holding the Shift key while shutting down your Windows PC ensures a complete shutdown by bypassing the hybrid sleep and fast startup features. This can help in scenarios where a fresh boot is necessary, like troubleshooting or ensuring all system updates are properly applied.

Are there any tasks which it couldn't close/stop when you shut off?

Had the same issue but it was tasks running which it couldn't stop after a March Windows update, update over the weekend fixed it.

When did your issue start? Did you try to roll back Windows updates?

Could try shutting down with force close.

Open run box (winKey + r)
shutdown -f -s -t 01

Shutdown with force in 1 second, i use this as my primary way of shutting down so that i don't get popups saying you didn't save this and that etc

Disable fast startup under Power Options.

@Balduran go into Bios first and just put it back to default, you could have "Power on after AC loss" or "wake on LAN" enabled. easier to just go back to default instead of hunting for those options... either way

if that doesn't work (I'm 99% it will) then do below; ignore red box its just a picture to show you the power page

windows - Shutdown settings in Power Options are missing - Super User

You could use -t 00.

Try unplugging your front panel IO (the one with your power and reset button) and do a shutdown again, see if that changes anything.

Going by my memory here but I think we had one like this a while back, it either ended up being the PSU not turning off so the green and black pins on the ATX connector were always hot or the front panel had enough resistance across the two pins used for the power button so it would think it was being pressed all the time, but not long enough to think that it is a deliberate button press.

Try unplugging all your usb devices and see if the behaviour changes
Yep.

I noticed my Dell laptop would reboot itself (most of the time) when my USB-C portable monitor was connected.

Was never completely consistent, though.

You've updated BIOS
Do you have any wake events configured in the BIOS?
Wake on mouse move, keyboard, LAN, etc?
Restore AC on power loss?

If this only happens with windows then it's probably something borked in windows not giving the halt instruction to your board, easiest way to check would be to make an ubuntu install disk and try shut down from the live image.

Yep, I am seeing a lot of windows windows windows, while I would start in the bios to check all the settings there including eg power states/platform power or whatever its called. Many a random issue has been solved with a new cmos battery and clearing the bios settings. Then work my way up to windows.

While somewhat on topic, I think I need to reinstall Windows myself sooner or later, been the same W10 install since december 2019.

When I choose reboot in Windows it will fully shut down the PC and startup within 2 seconds.

First check if someone changed what the power button does as a joke. Power settings.

Reinstall drivers and switch off windows fast startup. Incase it's a driver corruption with wake on Lan etc

Last resort. You can try restart in safe mode and try shutdown from safe mode to see what happens first. But if it's automatically restarting due to a silent blue screen, it shouldn't do that in safe mode (you can switch off automatically restart during blue screens ) . You could try run a sfc of dism command . But if you know what you doing you could likely always format and reinstall, which in most cases will give you better experience since you may forget to install this or that .
