Hey guys, I just installed a new PC and every now and then it turns off for like 2 seconds and then turns on again. It usually happens when i'm playing a game.

My specs:

- Intel DG45ID motherboard
- Intel Q9300 quad core
- ATI Gecube HD 4850
- 2x 2gigs OCZ ram
- 600w EZcool Powersupply

I got my GPU fan going at 100% speed, I at first thought it was overheating but I don't think so as it does it quite randomly(although always mostly when i'm in a game) It's going at 60C idle, which is decent for a ATI.

I have also been told it might be the PSU, any suggestions?

The Chip, Ram, PSU and Motherboard is brand new, the ATI I had with my old pc and I had no problems.

Thanks, r0ad.

Sounds like either the PSU or motherboard, most likely the PSU I think.

See if you can get it to happen consistently, or managed to recreate it at will, then try with a different PSU and see if it still happens.

Unplugging everything that isn't absolutely essential (HDDs, DVD, etc) while playing a game when this normally happens might reduce the load on the PSU enough for this to stop happening, but even if that's the case it isn't entirely conclusive.

name 'em & shame 'em

Take it back to supplier and title says it all.........

Memory could be a possible.
Could even be the PSU.
Maybe, just maybe the CPU.

I'd get the Ultimate Boot CD, boot from it and run a memory test, if the memory test is fine, then you know it's not that.
Next do the CPU test, let that run for a while see what happens then maybe it's not that.
Swop the PSU out (with something similar or better) and test see what happens.

That's how I fix most problems, process of elimination.

Where can I find that CD?

Check the following:

Your PC is overheating - did you use heatpaste or did you put too much on, this can also cause issues.

Is your PSU strong enough? Usually a ROM or HDD will stop working too to indicate this.

Memory - run a memchecker, lotw of small LINUX distros that are easy to install on a flash drive to test this.

If it is non-of-the-above you then have a serious issue and it needs to be returned - talking from much experience here.

I had the same problem. PC would run fine for hours if I was browsing the internet and watching movies and TV series.

As soon as I played a game, 5 minutes later my pc would restart. Turned out my ram was overheating and low and behold it was OCZ ram as well.

Also memtest won't help. I ran memtest when I had the problem and it picked up nothing.

Download Core Temp : http://www.alcpu.com/CoreTemp/ and check your CPU temps, they should not really exceed 70+ under load, they should withstand 80, but that's really pushing it.

Get Memtest86+ : http://www.memtest.org/#downiso

and burn it to CD (It's an ISO) and boot, test your RAM to make sure it's 100%, let it run for 3 complete passes at least. If you see any red, then your RAM is likely faulty.

I've seen it on the site below, but have never bought or used one yet:o.

You can get it at Foss CDs.

UBCD is an awesome tool but see if you cannot get a LINUX live CD instead for checking memory. Found it more reliable than UBCD.

But still get UBCD as it has many other awesome tools that everybody must have :D

Any distro in particular? Site above has a huge variety and is really cheap. Great for those of us who don't have the bandwidth to download the distro :).

Bleh I tried using my old ram(which worked fine), and it still restarted - even when not under stress. So i'm guessing its my PSU, i'll take it back tomorrow :)

Though I hear EZcool is a ****ey brand.

Have u got a mate with a 500w+ psu to borrow you?

Maybe like a coolermaster 550w or even an Antec 500w will do

I tend to think its mobo, brought a 2nd hand antec once and it did the same...replacing it with a coolermaster 430w fixed everything!

Hmmm, this is going to sound weird but it seems to only happen at night?

Like i've had my PC only all day, and at 6:20 it restarted and then again at 6:35, for the first time today. And I was playing games most of the day.

Same yesterday.

Check on the fluctuation on your electricity grid... it might be overloading on the grid itself...
