Computer security phone scam now in SA

A couple of clients called me over the last two weeks about apparent virus/security issues on their systems which "a Chinese sounding guy" called them about.

They were told that their networks have been scanned by SoAndSo IT Company live on the web and several viruses have been found. A quote of ~R1200-1500 was given to have the threats removed.

Garden Route area.

How ballsy are scammers become? it is really unbelievable.

It is also amazing how gullible people still are even with all warnings from banks and other institutions about phishing and scams.

The best form of defense against this scam is keeping your ant-virus and operating system up to date and if you are really concerned that there may be something wrong, contact the well-known registered professionals via the yellow pages or the internet.

A new scam which seems callers post as security engineers offering to help rid PC threats for free is cropping up in South Africa...

I received one of these calls a few weeks back, The Indian Techie from "Microsoft" said that I have a virus on my PC an that its sending out loads of data. My antivirus software is up to date and I monitor my usage daily and I knew something was up and tried to fish what his story was. He said I'm receiving this call because I am a registered Microsoft user and requested I should click on Start go to my computer blah blah .... like he is reading from a scripts or something. When I asked him what it was he wanted me to check coz I'm currently running Win 8 Dev Preview he sounded confused and didnt know what is was :wtf: and just kept on saying I should click on start.:wtf:. eventually he got frustrated with me and said if I don't listen to him my Computer will explode and it gonna be my own fault for not listening to him :wtf: :D

Ha ha ha! LOL @ Microsoft "Techie"

Yeah, I posted about these scumbags a while ago. Told my in-laws that their computer has been sending out spam, and that they need a new virus program... Luckily, my mom in-law is quite vicious and told them to take a hike. She told them, "sorry, but our computer is managed by someone who knows more than you do (me) and besides, we have a Mac, we don't have any viruses"
They got pretty upset with her and slammed the phone down. ROFL :D

Unfortunately, they did manage to scam my mother-in-law this past Saturday because I was away and out of cellphone reception. They eventually got her to login to LogMeIn remote access, but as soon as she saw they were controlling her mouse her "spidey-sense" triggered and she pulled the plug on her router. No harm done, other than a bruised ego.

Its the unqualified people who know how to switch a pc on and feel they are UNSCAMMABLE - or just the tannie down the road

Times like this I start to loose faith in humanity (More the people being scammed than the scammers themselves) ...

Reminds of these Facebook math questions going around. Names have been LEFT IN to ridicule the moronic.

Question: ‎6 - 6 * 6 + 1 = ?

Chandre Van der Speck: ‎31?
Wade Alex Hayward: Ja its 31.
Kim Mel Fuller: Isn it 1?

- Edit 2 -

<Reelix|Asleep> 6 - 36 + 1
<KroBa> 6 - 37 = -31
<KroBa> are you blind to - signs?

hahahahaha "Computer will explode and it gonna be my own fault for not listening to him" - classic..

I have had over 10 calls from these people. Now for some reason they know my surname.

They told me that the Western Cape has been hit with electro magnetic malware. I just burst out laughing. I just put the phone down now. I have also told them that I didnt have my pc at home and they where confused. I have told them that I am not the home owner.

They should block this number on the telkom exchange.

It would even be funnier if you had an Apple Mac

They tried this on my fiancee too. She said "hold on, let me put you on to the guy who manages the IT here"...

They hung up before I could troll them :(

I wish people who fall for these scams were as rude to these scammers as what they are to IT guys :p doesn't add up for me.

79 percent of 7 000 people polled in the UK, Ireland, US and Canada suffered some sort of loss following the scam

My goodness people are naive fools.
